as most of you know caramac is not eating and has not for nearly 6 months. at the moment she is in a 15x15inch viv and i am using a heat mat as the heat source. im thinking maybe a diffrent heat source would be a good idea.
any ways i have just read the 'sticky' on types of thermostats. i have got a spare 3ft viv(which i can put a partion in) with a light fitting already. i have got this bulb but dont think it is suitable and i have a spare stat
is this combo a good idea or do i need to upgrade to a ceramic bulb and holder and a diffrent stat.
also i would like to know if anyone has any thoughts on my plan. |

I use a red bulb for heat as it can be on all the time without disturbing her sleep, so I'd go for one of those or a ceramic. The bulb in the picture wouldn't be suitable as it'll give off a lot of light and not much heat when you really need the reverse.
Is the thermostat a dimmer? That's the only kind that you can use with a bulb that gives off light. |

i would go with a ceramic and ceramic holder.the stat should work ok on a ceramic.but a pulse or dimmer would probley work better. |

The bulb will give off very little heat and the stat is an on/off stat so the bulb will be on and off every 2 minuites (though in reality it will be on all the time because it will never reach the temperature set on the stat).
I would go for a ceramic bulb on a pulse. |

Depends what wattage (is that a word?). With a small 60 watt bulb you may manage it in a 2' viv. A 3ft+ viv will be fine. |

Theoreticaly there should be no differance between a 100 watt bulb and a 250 watt bulb in a 3ft viv apart from the bigger bulb would have to work less saving energy and bulb life. |

I have just moved my non feeder from a 3 foot viv heated by a 250w ceramic back to a RUB and a heat mat. Going the opposite way to you.
the lamp you had in the first pic is a UV light bulb. The guard look ok. I have one of those covering a lamp. At the end of the day it only to stop the snake touching the ceramicdirectly. |

I have never measured the temp of my guards. IMO they are only there to stop the snake being able to coil round the heat source and stay there. the guards will always be hotter than the floor temp as it is closer to the heat source. |

the guard might get hot when initially getting the viv up to temperature with the bulb and stat running flat out. once the set temp is reached the bulb won't be on as much (depending on the type of stat) so the guard should generally be cooler. |
