Live rats are killed by using CO2 by most people. Feeding a large live rat is asking for trouble really. |

Easier to get them from a Pet Shop.
Not much cheaper (unless on a massive scale) to do it at home, but at least you'd know they were fresh. |

If your feeding under 10 or so snakes, just get them from the shop. Its cheaper.
Rat pups and weaner rats are fine to feed live (safe for the snake), but its not really needed unless the snake isnt feeding.
The rats are put into boxes or bags which are then slowly filled with CO2 untill they die. To be honest im not sure how humanly the industry does it, but many people that breed thier own add the CO2 slowly so its less pain on the rodent. |

i'm getting some multis as breeders soon as one of my Dums is a non-feeder turned live-feeder, and the one i've just bought is a force-feeder....... a route i'd rather not take! |

well i am breeding mice and rats atm.... so far it has cost me a grand total of..... £00.00 for 3 tanks, 3 cages, 2 male rats, 1 female rat, 2 female mice and 2 male mice, plus bedding, food, accesories etc. gotta love freecycle ;) they get fed on whatever food the rabbits/cats/dogs waste, plus a bag of rat food i got off freecycle, plus any left over/wasted food so not paid out anything yet.

i know i do :s here's how i am doing it for the mo... all 3 rats are un related, so i have got 1 male with the female and the other male (the injured one) on his own. when the female drops i will keep one female baby and when it's old enough put it with the other male to breed. HOPEFULLY i will be able to get another 2 female rats at some point, and i will be swoping rats with 3 different people (who also swop rats with other people) to prevent in breeding. i think that's how it will be working out. it's been a long time since i bred them for pet shops lols. the most annoying part is the paperwork, i have to keep some form of records so i know which rat is which and been bred by and with whom LOL the rats are in the kitchen and get cleaned out daily so their smell isn't a problem, the mice are in the shed and get cleaned out twice a week, they don't smell too bad. with rats, it's the males that smell as they wee everywhere, as long as they are cleaned out daily or even every other day the smell is not a problem ;) |
