Is it OK to let snakes out onto the lawn in good weather? The reason I'm asking is that while we can keep the cats away I can't guarantee that they won't have peed on the grass. Is residual cat pee hazardous to snakes? |

That's the only thing I was going to mention. But I think that it should be ok unless it starts digging in a litter tray. |

That's good to know. I would have thought that in the wild they'd come across all kinds of animal pee, but I wanted to check before the poor wee thing got poisoned! |

I wouldn't have thought there'd be many natural snake parasites in the UK, I don't know much about generic ones, Paulus is probably the man to answer that. |

what about things like tapeworm or other parasitic worms that may be there as a result of another animal..? |

But wouldn't the snake have to eat something in order to get those? |

no, only has to flick it's tongue out, that comes into contact with tiny parasitic worm eggs on the grass, the eggs are then ingested and the snake develops a parasite burden.
BUT it's easily treatable with something like Panacur 2.5% (a pyrantel based anthelmintic) and the way i see it, i routinely worm my cats, dogs and horses, so why not my snakes too? (just those exposed to any risk)
another potential problem would be ticks, easily treatable with Frontline spray.
both Panacur 2.5% and Frontline are readily available, you don't have to get it from a vet. |
