Hi guys, I've been registered on the CornSnake.co.uk, and know I've bought a Royal I thought I'd register on here.
Heres my Royal - nameless as of yet!
He's a normal male royal, bought him today.
I already have a question, which might sound a bit odd.
My corn always hides. Rarely he stays out in the open, and when he is he's generally looped round the fake vines. Since I put my Royal in his new home, he has just stayed sat on top of the cork hide I bought for him, he went under once, but came out again and has been on top ever since.
I have him in a large plastic Exo Terra Faunarium with a large exoterra water bowl, a cork hide which is just like a curved over piece of bark really, and a moss hide. There isn't a whole lot of open space, but I'm sure he can get under the hide, yet he stays on top? Is this normal? |

heya Mulv, nice to see you her and your new addition he'll probably have a good exploration of his new home while you're in bed - Royals are nocturnal so are most active at night. hopefully he'll take to his new hide soon, reasons for him not using it are too hot, too cold, direct (sun?)light shining in during the day I'm sure he'll settle in fine he looks lovely BTW |

Thanks GP. I have a digital exo terra thermometer and hydrometer winging their way to me soon so once I have those in I'll be able to check temps and humidity. Or I might borrow the one from Slim's tank. |

Its quite normal for them to stay out and have a good look around to begin with. |

Just a thought - if he's nocturnal, is it best to handle him late at night or early morning or does it not matter too much? Just worried I'll annoy him if I handle him during the day. |

Mine tend to disappear during the day so I handle in the evening/night.
I would suggest not handling for at least a week though. |

as i feed Queenie in his RUB the routine for handling is: handling ONLY on a night, feed ONLY on a morning, to try to prevent confusion between my hand and a mouse (not that i have mousy hands!) |

Yeah I handled him for a short time before he went into his new home, but he's being left well alone until after the weekend, then I'll offer him a feed and if he takes it let him digest, then I'll handle I think. Sound ok?
Handling in the evening is better for me anyway, I'm out of the house 5 days a week from 7am til 6pm. |

that sounds ok if he is feeding well...
most people suggest that you shouldnt handle them til they are regular feeders but I know how hard that can be.
cos mine new girl has not fed in about 12 weeks i am leaving her pretty much alone till she has taken at least 3 feeds...
