Hi I am a bit worried that when my snake fed yesterday i noticed there was a couple of bits of substrate stuck to the rat pup? I did not want to try and take the food away in case i got bitten. Will this harm my snake and what should i look out for? I was not aware that i should have been putting my snake elsewhere to feed. What do you use to feed your snake in? any help with this would be greatly appreciated Thanks

What substrate was it?
I feed all mine in their vivs, they are all on Aspen, the mice are dry defrosted and the snakes strike feed so they tend not to get any substrate on, but a bit of Aspen won't hurt.
Larger lumps such as Beech Chips or Orchid Bark are more likely to get stuck if ingested and can cause serious issues with impaction.
For this reason some people feed out of the viv in a feeding tub, which is great if your Royal will accept it and you can get them back into their viv safely. |

I have just googled chipsi extra and it does look a bit big to be swallowed by a young snake, how big was the piece? |

All you can do now is keep a good eye on him. He should be alright, but there is a slight chance he might get a bit of constipation.
A warm bath may help |

hi there this is a bit of an old thread now but oh well. im using calci sand and used to feed in the cage. once the pup got a few bits of substrate on it so i brushed it off while mr snakey was still squeezing and he just squeezed harder and got a bit annoyed with it lol. after a minute or so he got off threw it around a little bit and started strangling it again lol. |

eek, as above, Calci sand has a lot of issues, certainly don't feed on it. I'd suggest getting onto Aspen or even Newspaper asap. |

calci-sand is for things like beardies and wholly unsuitable for snakes! |
