Hi guys,

Ive got a rub setup for a royal. Im not buying the royal till the temps work out.

So far I have the following:

18 litre rub
6x11 heat matt
reptibark substrate ( i hear it could have mites )
Ministat 100

So ive set the stat to around 35c. The temp in the rub is around 32c at the warm end which is great. The temp at the cold end isnt so great! its probably about 20c on a rug by my desk.

How do i get the cool end upto 24c without turning the central heating up. I have one of two options I can think of.

The first option is to wire in another heat mat. Or I have a small 25w spot light I use to heat some water to 22c which i could use.

I do have a room in the house where the heating pipes run through the floor which I think would bring up the temps...

What do u guys suggest

Hi, welcome to the forum, how are you measuring the temperatures? - Digital or Dial, on the substrate?

WRT the substrate, if you put it in a baking tray in a med-hot oven for an hour or so it will kill off any nasties.

I only keep my cool ends at 22C so you're not too far off.

Im using a infra red thermometer, and its tested to be very accurate thus far with the numerous tests ive done.

Is your 22c room temp in your house or have you got it that warm by other means? Any tips to help me get my cold end warmer would be great

just a quick one...

i had to start seting my temps on the viv floor not on top of the substrate cos my snakes seem to shift all the subtrate away.

the temp in the cool end is always going to be a bit colder in winter, as long as the warm end is right i wouldn't really be that concerned. you could always add a 3rd hide in the middle of the temperature gradient (partially on the heatmat) to offer a safe place at an in-between temperature

heya and welcome BTW

my heat mat covers ONLY 1/3. Its a 6x11 so its dead on a third :D

Ill maybe drop the temp down 3 degrees then as its on 35-37 right now on the rub floor. The substrate is 29-30.
Ill put the viv upstairs and see if the temps go up a bit. Im just waiting on my hygrometer now, so I can make sure its 50-60% then its snake buying time! woooo!
