just got i hygrometer from donny show i installed it in the middle of my viv about 4-5 inches off the substrate (bark chips).
it is reading 65% humidity.
i have one medium sized water bowl in the cool end and the bark chips have been in for a few weeks so not damp.
is this normal/ok???

bark chips arent the best substrate, they hold mites really well, best way to treat that is bake them (supervised) to kill them then rinse the chips. Also dont feed your royal on the substrate, some of it could get eaten accidently and cause impaction for your royal. Aspen is better as it can be digested and is a lot looser and more flexible that bark chips.
in regards to the humidity, 66% is fine, the aim is 60%, just watch in case it goes over 70%, if it does, reduce the size of the water bowl or the amount of water you have in there! :D |

was advised to use bark to get the humidty...
i do bake the bark as found freezing and washing caused so much condensation in viv cos wouldnt dry out...
never feed in sid the viv...
wot substrate would you suggest. i use beech chips for my corns.

aspen/kitchen roll are the best ones to use as its hard for them to be digested and if they do its only a small amount and it can be digested, yes bark chip is good to hold humidity but has more risks with it.
if you do want to use it, baking is the best way to prevent mites but be aware they can survive in it. make sure the bottom of the viv doesnt get too humid as thats where it will hold it and can cause rot tot he snakes skin and do not feed in the viv on the substrate! |
