I am setting up another viv, but just wanted to know a couple of things.
The viv measures 30x12x18
I am using a red heat lamp on a dimmer stat, will i need a heat mat? and where is the best place to put the dimmer probe? The light is angled from the side of the viv not straight down.
Thanks |

You don't need a heat mat and I have the probe at the hottest point of the substrate. |

ok, thanks BE, i think i will change where the bulb is, will be easier to have it pointing down than right across the viv...
I remembered that post Lee, Thanks for the pointer... |

if i put the probe at the hottest point of the substrate which in this case is newspaper, will it get hot real quick and shut off? i am worried the viv will not then be warm enough. |

Dimming stats don't turn it off.
This is how I have all mine. |

A dimmer alters the amount of energy sent to the heat source to maintain the temperature, it doesnt just switch it on or off. |

I've got the same stat in Sherman and Matilda's vivs. When it's first switched on in the morning the light is completely on. The temp usually goes slightly over on the initial heat up so the light goes out but once it hits the right temperature the 'heat' light (red or orange on mine) dims down like a torch when the batteries are fading. It should stay like this all the time it's switched on. It never goes completely off sort of like the funky dimmer switchs on household lights in the 70s/80s.
Hope that helps. I found that the instructions in the box might as well have been for a wardrobe, they were that useful. |

Do i have to..
Ok, i had the other viv on top of peanut my royal's viv, and the heat from his ceramic bulb had heated the bottom of this viv, it must have been way above what i set the dimmer at..lol..so the light never came on till i hit the 90 degree mark on the stat, once the bottom of the viv had cooled it kicked in...and now it is fine...and come the morning i can put my king snake in it away from Peanut..
BE, why dont you use ceramic heat? |

I like the red light and it means that I can watch the snakes without need for any further lighting. Snakes can barely (if at all) detect red light so it doesn't interrupt them, they think its pitch black, but I can see them. |

I have a stack of red led's in my spares bin, very tempted to fit some in spots new viv. Low voltage, could run off a battery for a week or so of evenings if you were afraid of mains voltage, ( well working with 9v off a mains adaptor). Easy project as well.
Is the snakes don't see red spectrum thing a quantified fact? |
