I'm new to the site and also to keeping snakes. I'm buying a royal python next week and would like to know the basics of what/what not to do! I've read tons about the subject online but i'd like to know of some of your experiences. I was told that i needn't spend loads of money buying a viv, as i can keep it in a very large storage box kitted out with hides/water bowl/plants and chippings. Is this true? Also, my [soon to be] python is just short of a year old, what should i start off feeding it with? Pinkies?
Thanks, Angharad. |

Hi and welcome.
You can keep them in storage box's, but vivs look alot nicer. Also a year old royal will be feeding on adult mice or small rats.
If its on mice you want to get it feeding on rats as soon as possible.
Have you got any specif questions? Do you want to explain the details of your set-up so we can comment? |

heya and welcome a yearling royal should at least be on rat pups if not something bigger but the current owner should be able to advise you regarding his current diet. Really Useful Boxes are good for Royals, they just need ventilation holes drilling on the sides or lid, about 1cm diameter is fine. have you read the care sheet on here? it would be best to get your viv set up before you get the snake, to sort the temperatures out and make sure everything will fit in! |

Ahhh, thank you for the replies :) Well more specifically, I intend on looking for the largest storage box i can find and my partner said he would be able to drill plenty of holes for ventilation. If i can't find a large enough box, i will invest in a viv, i'm holding back due to the fact that no doubt as he grows i will need to buy a larger, more fitting viv for his size. So i guess i'm thinking financially, am i better with a large storage box to begin with then spend a lot on upgrading his new home?
Also, i have read that they're dosile creatures [and yup i've read the caresheet] but i'm just wondering how often you can hold royal pythons? Once / twice a day max? I have housemates and although i'll be keeping him away from them, no doubt they'll get curious and want to hold him. I don't want to stress it out in any way.
Lastly, i'll be buying him from a breeder in Wales [a friend of my partners, we will be in immediate contact with eachother this weekend, instead of using my boyfriend as a messenger] but i live in Birmingham most of the time therefore, if i find a large enough box [preferably a different one to his house] is it okay to have him in a car for a two hour journey? Should i cover the box to prevent stress??
Thank you:) |

After reading this i think you would be better off with a corn snake,i only handle mine 1 to 2 times a week.Royals really would rather not be handle, they dont need much of an excuse to stop feeding and being handle 1 to 2 times a day by differant people is sure to stress them out.Cornsnakes on the other hand love being out and dont get stressed so easily |

yeahh my housemate & boyfriend have one each but i've fallen in love with royal pythons :$ I can handle leaving it be for days at a time, i was just wondering in general how stressed they can get and how much/little they like to be handled. I know they'll want to hold him at least once when i get it, i didn't mean they'll be fooling around with him alot of the time. Your response has answered that query anyway so thankyous:) |

HI and welcome to the forum
If you put the royal in to big an enclosure it will stress him out, they dont need loads of space, the smaller the better for them, they like to feel secure and have lots of hiding places to,
If your travelling with him, it would be good to put him in a pillowcase and tie the top so he cant get out, this way he will feel nice and secure and wont see what is going on.
I put the pillowcase inside mine or my sons jacket to keep him warm to, but you dont have to do that, is just something i do in cold weather.
Good luck with your royal and if you need anymore help then just post on here and someone will be here. |

ok here's the low down on Royals if they're stressed - they won't eat if their enclosure is too big - they stress and won't eat if their temps aren't right - they don't eat if they're handled frequently - they don't eat but don't worry as long as your RP isn't losing weight when - he won't eat.
think that just about sums RPs up? |

probably all except the fourth one, some tolerate handling better than others and if they get used to it when they're young they should be more handleable as adults |

hi, the pillow case is a good idea. I managed to get a proper cotton bag thrown in from the shop when I bought my viv set up. I also places some newspaper in the bag when I brought her back from the breeder. I handle Grace who I have had for 1 month two to three times a week. She is 8 months old and kept in a 2 foot viv. She seems happy and is feeding well. Hope this helps. |

The responses have all been super helpful, but plans changed at the last minute sadly. I live at uni in Birmingham, but am graduating in May, then returning home(in Wales)[until i have sufficient funds to move out], so with that in mind, i figured id check with the mother unit to see if she was cool with a royal python residing in our house for a few months until i move out.... she decided it was too risky as she thought it would eat my two year old sister SOOOOO, i now have an albino mexican milk snake. which is super cute anyway.
I still really really want a royal python but i'll wait until i have a place of my own. My boyfriend and i have totally fallen in love with them so we're waiting til we have aplace of our own.
Gutted in a way but i do love my milk snake :) And thank you all very much for your responses!!
[and before someone says it.. i did try and explain to my mother that a very young royal python could not eat a child and that it would probably be scared of her.. not threatened!]
Oh well :) |
