Hey people,

I am collecting my new royal next week and need to transport him 250 miles up the country. I plan to pop him in a pillowcase and put this in a rub with a couple of those heat pads you get for back pain problems.

Having never transported a snake further than 5 miles before, does this sound a resonable method of transportation?

Sounds ok, not sure you'll need the heat pads if the car is warm.

I don't know from experience but people I've spoken to reckon they travel better in the boot of the car with no extra heating - it's cool, dark but is heated underneath (like a heatmat) from the exhaust.

BTW Manc, your sig is out of date - corns are Pantherophis guttata now

If you have a saloon car I would strongly advise against putting your snake in the boot. Some vehicles can suffer from a large build up of carbon monoxide in the boot under certain conditions. This will make you snake ill or possibly kill it.

Sorry if that sounded a bit blunt.

no prob PW but how could there be a build up of carbon monoxide? unless the car had a blowing exhaust (which you can hear)

CO doesn't present a problem with hatchbacks and estates because there is adequate ventilation to help remove any exhaust fumes. The boot of a saloon car however does not have the same level of ventilation. The boot seal is water tight but not air tight and if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction or the car is running but stationary for prolonged periods of time the exhaust gases are not blown away from the vehicle. This can then cause a build up of CO, amongst other loverly gases, around the boot area of the vehicle. General rule of thumb to use is if you wouldn't travel in that part of the vehicle then don't put your pet in there either. If you watch cars in the winter when the exhaust is more visible you'll see what I mean. A blowing exhaust just makes the situation much worse.

No probs. Just didn't want anyone to get to their destination and find their pride and joy dead in the boot.

I can't believe that I actually managed to write that without any 'Carry-On' style innuendo!!!

I shall put him on the back seat, as the dog is going in the boot (of the hatchback before you all shout!) and the cat in the front seat.
Collecting him in 2 days. Woohoo
