Hi everyone.
I'm thinking about getting a snake, and royals are the ones that most attract me. I have a diploma in animal management and have been obsessed with animals since i was 5. I have never kept a reptile before though.
The collage that I went to had a royal. I just think they are so much more charismatic than any other captive snake I have seen.
The main reason I have joined this forum is to try and get more information about royals before i buy. Also if anyone knows where to purchase a captive bred one in the Lincolnshire or Nottinghamshire area.
There seems to be on the website and books I have, a difference in opinion on them as first time snakes.
Do they make good first time snakes?

hullo and welcome to the forum :)
A royal was my first time snake, i didnt do so well with him as i didnt research first :(
but that is what you are doing, it's a good thing. I reckon if you research properly, ask as many questions as you can think of, i dont see why a royal shouldn't be a good first time snake, though they can be fussy feeders.
There is a ton of info on here though, and it's filled with some very nice, helpful and knowledgable people.

I don't mind either, a shop or breeder, as long as they are captive bred. I read on another thread on this site, that its best to go for a yearling. Do you agree?

heya and welcome

TBH if you're wanting a normal and you're buying from a shop then 9 times out of 10 it'll be a CF rather than CB (whatever the shop tells you!!) my royal is CF and so are a lot of people's on here. if treated correctly for internal and external parasites as soon as they arrive in the importers care and they get established feeding, they're no different to a CB.

Dumerils boas, BCO hybrids, Sinder Hypo boas, cornsnakes, ratsnakes, Day Geckos

Hiya, Sofia is my first snake & i love her to bits, i've had the non feeding bit, but i think it was my fault, the best advice i can give is to get one that is an established feeder, so a yearling would be better if it's your first.

0.2.0 Cats (Spud & Phoebe) RIP Stevie fat man
1.1.0 Royals (Syd & Sofia)
2.2.3 Corns (Hogan, Shaggy, Sparkle, Tango, Fred, Haribo & Go Faster)
0.0.1 Columbian Rainbow Boa (Escobar)
1.1.0 Variable King Snakes (Lancelot & Guinaverre)
0.0.20 Fish

Hi Sash My royal is CF and my first snake apart from a little mites problem which seems to be under control things have been going great. Just make sure you do loads of research, there is a good caresheet on here and loads over the web. But nothing can beat experience so any questions there are loads of experts on here that can help you. Make sure you dont get the snake till your absoloutly ready with all the equipment and make sure that includes a thermostat. A royal is a great pet and if looked after properly will become a great friend.

I'm glad to hear that CF make good pets too. I was worried that they would have problems with feeding, and be more aggressive. Knowing that others get on fine with CF has reasured me. I contacted a shop near me and he has two normal CF, they are both over 2 years old. I may have a look at them, if they are still there in a few weeks.
Although I love the normals there are a few of the morphs I love too. I imagine i would have to pay alot more for a morph though.
Thanks to everyone who has replied. I will probably get on your nerves by posting loads of question around the forum now x
