as my mum now has a bosc an my invert collection is growing im now breeding food for them.
first up is the locusts that have just been moved into a 2x18x18 viv as ive just ordered 50 xl ones that should be here in a day or 2
and picked up some GALS from a friend this evening.
3 fairly large ones to get some eggs from soon
im not really a fan of them but these are quite pretty for snails.
and another tub with loads of eggs that will hatch in a few days

Oh the fun of live food, lol. I am sticking to roaches and worms, crickets and locust are easier to buy as I dont have a huge demand for them the roaches are a doddle to breed the worms I have just clean up after the snails. I have silk worms too but I've hit a bump in the road with them, cant get the dam eggs to hatch. lol.
If they are Giant African Land Snails it could be some time before you get eggs out of them, mine are about the size of my hand and still haven't got down the the breeding yet. You will quite quickly become attached to them too, between keeping their shells clean and watching them destroy pretty much anything you feed them and them growing so fast and producing twice as much poop as the food they have eaten. I recommend getting yourself some woodlice, they help keep everything clean , I also have worms in the soil too and springtails, i need all the help i can get to keep them clean. |

I agree with Lotabob, those GALS won't be laying any eggs for a while yet. They need to be fully grown before they'll start and even then they seem to like to keep you waiting. I'm talking as many as five or six years. From around that size mine took four years before they layed, but those clutches were all bad. It took a while longer for them to be fertile.
Another bit of bad news. If you've just got those eggs in the post then I'm afraid there's a fair chance that the majority of them won't hatch. Moving eggs at any stage, even just a smigine, will cause the gas bubble at the top to move and this in turn will suffocate the babies inside. It's the same with any eggs, Birds, Lizards ect. And we all know how things get treated in the post these days.
I could be wrong though. They may all hatch and before long you'll be over run with babies!
Oh, and you will love them ; )
Locusts on the other hand... may mam can't get rid of them fast enough! |

cheers for the info i will look into getting some worms/woodlice/spring tails.
i got the snails an eggs from a friend who only lives down the road so the eggs were moved from one tub into another and brought round in the car so fingers crossed they wernt disturbed too much.
strangley i find the locusts more interesting that the snails but as you two have said this could change soon |

Locusts are all fun until they bite you. lol. I've been bit by locusts and adult crickets they dont hurt a lot, more of a nip, if you ever get fruit beetle grubs watch out, they really bite hard.
Not heard about moving the eggs been bad for them but I intend on using any eggs as fish food so doesn't effect me lol. |

Locusts bite? Wow, never knew that. I'll be telling my mam that, I bet she didn't know either! : /
She has her two little Toads. I hope they don't get bitten. Mind you, I think they eat them too quick for the Locusts to react! |

| Yeah I dont think they could do much damage when they bite. it is more of a nip than an actual bite. |

touch wood ive not been bitten by a locust even after catching the escapees, ive got a big one thats recently moulted an is bright pink which i think is female if i remember right.
will try an get a pic of it |

caught one of the locusts moulting was fascinating to watch and got some pics
you can see how pink it is
did some reading an they go pink when they reach sexual maturity then go brown for female an bright yellow for male |

Yeah, that would make sense. My mam has informed me that her's are getting particularly friendly now with each other. Not that anything can come of it 'cause they're not kept warm enough... she doesn't think.
They are very pretty things really. My mam likes to watch them eat 'cause she says they smile! |

the locusts did lay a load of eggs but i had given up on them ever hatching as this was around 2 1/2 months ago but mu mum was looking at them earlier and there are baby locusts running around.
they are tiny only about 3-4mm long will try an get some pics tomorrow |

i had sort of given up on breeding them as they usually hatch after 2 weeks. i buy a bag of 100 xl locusts an they last longer an grow fast in the viv.
heres one of the baby locusts you can see how tiny they are
