In my experience they work well when used under rubs and the room temp is warm enough for the cold end. I wouldn't use one where a royal could come in to contact with it like inside a viv, regardless of the weight of the snake. not worth the risk of the snake getting burnt IMO. I perefer to use ceramics in vivs and mats solely under rubs |

Aye I have mats and heat cable for my RUB's, all under the RUB naturally. Not sure why you'd want a heat mat in a vivarium to be honest when it's so easy to provide a light :) |
