Hi
I have just registered on this forum after lurking and reading for the past few days.
I used to keep a cornsnake but sadly she died last year but now we have just bought a Royal Python instead! (CB12, male, "normal", and as yet unnamed). He is 4 months old and is apparently a reliable eater, hed fed yesterday on a medium mouse and last shed 10 days ago.
We are keeping him in a well furnished 36x12x15 aquarium with appropriate viv lid, heated by a 60W red lamp. Mid tank temps are steady at 80F (85F during the evening if the central heating is on). Humidity is quite high at 80% but I assume this will drop to the target of 60% over the next few days as the orchid bark substrate dries out.
Hopefully once the boy has settled in we will get some photos up - my wife is a keen photographer so hopefully we should get some good shots :)

You really need to know what your hot end temps are rather than just your mid position. I would suggest a slightly larger heater as your room temps shouldnt really bump up the temps. My hot end always sits at around 90/91 with the central heating on or off. Night time temps are circa 8f lower due to a dual time zone stat.

Hello and welcome and as already stated you should up your temperatures to around 88 - 91 F I use 100watt bulbs as they have to work less hard but can also produce more heat when the room temp drops to keep a steady temperature at the hot end.

Where do you get 100watt lamps from? I can only find red bulbs rated to 60w and they are only just adequate in this cold weather.

Feeding time!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

He seems to have settled in well. He had his first feed with us this evening, he missed with his first strike but made sure with the second! The Temps have settled down nicely, the hot end varies from 85 overnight to 90 through the afternoon and evening. ( measured at ground level). Humidity has settled to 50%, he has plenty of hides and generally seems really happy. He no longer curls into a ball when handled and although he spends most of the time in his hides he does come out for the occasional cruise around the viv.
All in all I think he's doing just fine.

Now the fun bit - naming him!
Being a Royal Python I though it would be fun to give him a royal name! Some great suggestions from the family included King Henry IX, Elvis, Ozzy ( after all he is the prince of darkness) but I think we are going with my wifes suggestion of Jareth ( the goblin king in the Film Labyrinth )

So enjoy the pic, hopefully I will get some more posted soon. Next project however us to start planning for the rack - my wife has decided that just one snake is not enough!

Thanks for the welcome guys.
We are going start building a new viv for Jareth over christmas. At the moment he is in an old fish tank with a metal viv lid and although I have lagged 3 sides and the top with polystyrene tiles the heat retention is very poor. His new viv is being made from an old telephone table, several slabs of 1" thick polystyrene and some wood veneer to make it pretty :)
Only real expense is getting the glass cut to size for the sliding front. We will post pics when its done :)
