Hey, sorry I've got a fair few questions so I'll put them all in one threat to avoid sharking the forum lol
Basically my little Royal has mites, we've been trying to sort them but it's taking a while, basically my first question is, ust recently, I've noticed some weird kind of grey patches on him that weren't there before, over his black scales towards his under belly, is this a side effect of the mites?
Also, since he's had the mites I've noticed some weird red round marks round his mouth, he has been running it mouth a fair bit more too, again is this another side effect?
Also, this is a non-mite related question I know snakes often stretch their mouth, but is there any reason my little royal 'yawns' in my hand so often? I think the only time he does it is when I'm holding him, don't get me wrong I'm not complaining about it I'm just asking, I find it interesting to watch haha.
Also how often do Royals poo? I've had a corn for ages and this little guy's my new Royal, so I'm used to a corn poo routine, we haven't seen that much poo from this little man, because he's contracted mites he's shedding pretty often, he only seems to poo when he's shed, that's the only time we've seen any so far, each time he's shed. Is this normal or is it a cause for concern? |

Hi, I can't really help with mites or info on royals as I only have my Cali king ATM but I asked about the yawning thing on the kingsnake forum and was told that snakes do this to re align the jaw after eating.... I'm not sure if this is the same as you say he is in your hand at the time though.
I hope you get your little boy clear of mites and sorted soon. :) |

Sorry to hear about the mites. How are you treating them? The general consensus from those unfortunate enough to have to deal with them use Callingtons Spray, basically you take snakey out, for a bath to drown/kill off any mites on the snake, while snake is away, strip bare the vivariumn and then spray the crap out of the viv and surrounding furniture, carpets etc as they are mobile and wander off. Wait until its dry and put the now mite free snake back into the now mite unfriendly vivarium keeping the viv as bare as possible using only kitchen roll for substrate. I'd personally just chuck any branches, foliage, cork and substrate you have and boil the hides.
The marks sound like scale damage caused by the mites pushing under the scales though if you can get a picture it would be beneficial to rule out anything else. If the snake is showing visible signs of wounds though I would strongly avoid using any mite treatments you apply to the snake (to be honest I'd avoid them in all but extreme infestations, water kills the mites, let the chemicals treat and protect the vivarium) The yawning may also be due to mites, they congregate at the moist mouth and I'm sure its uncomfortable, the sores in that area could be both the mites biting there and also head rubbing from the irritation.
Dont be surprised if it stops eating too (that's if it is eating), treating them and the mites themselves stress them out and stressed snakes dont eat very well.
Good luck and anymore questions just go for it. |

JBarlow, really? That poo that rarely? :O
Nicola, yeah I assume it's because of feed time coming, up and after feeding, it's cool to watch haha
Lotabob when I went back to the place I get him I asked them what the best course of treatment was and he suggest nothing you can get from a shop.. Apparently the mites get immune to mite treatment too quickly, he suggested bathing him ever 3-4 days and COMPLETELY cleaning and disinfecting his whole viv at the same time, so that's what I'm doing. And yeah he is on paper towels too.
And okay, I'll try get some half decent pictures too, that sounds horrible though D: and yeah the bloke I got him from asked if he'd gone off his food too and he was surprised to find out he's eating absolutely perfectly still, apparently that's rare? Thanks for such an in-depth reply Lotabob |

Duke my 1.6kg male poops 3 times a year and I'm not joking.
Mites get immune to treatments if you only half arse treat things, just means all the weak ones die leaving just the tough mites to carry on breeding and passing on their tough genes. Callingtons is the nuclear bomb of the mite world, if you do it right they dont become immune they become deceased. It also provides a level of protection against any wandering mites coming back. |

i use ardap for treating mite's empty, hoover an scrub the viv then spray load's of ardap in there. it need's to dry for 24hrs then be aired out for 4-5hrs before putting the snake back, personally i would do the same if using callington's even though they claim it's safe i wont risk it.
while the viv is drying i very gently clean round their eye's with a damp cotton bud as the mite's hide there then cover the snake with olive oil. you can leave the oil on or give them a warm bath after a couple of hour's i leave it on. leave the snake in a rub while the viv is drying/airing then once aired out put them back using newspaper/tissue as substrate |
