Hi, I have just installed a 150 watt Lucky Reptile ceramic heater in a Pro Rep large heater guard. The set up includes a pulse thermostat probe ditectly below the heater.

I am getting my temperatures up to speed but the guard appears to be getting very hot. I can touch it without getting burnt but I certainly would not like to keep my hand there for more than a few seconds.

The heater is not touching the guard and the thermostat seems to be working as the pulse light is flashing when it reaches the required temperature.

Is it normal for these guards to get this hot and if so can I presume it will not harm my snake?

Regards

Strangely our 3ft x 15" x 18"h wooden viv has a 100w ceramic and guard fitted and this guard gets pretty warm like you are describing. Now in my 3ft x 24" x 24"h wooden viv I have a 150w ceramic and guard fitted (same make of guard as being used with 100w) and this one does not get no where near as hot. I am assuming its because the 150w does not have to work so hard to keep the temps up though both stats pulse at the same speed.
