Hi, Yet another new member on the forum Just got my first Royal on Wednesday and gave him his first feed (with me) last night. Chuffed to bits with him and how hes settling in. This looks like a good forum with a very good knowledge base so no doubt ill be asking plenty of questions in the future.

Heyup, I have to say I've got abit of a soft spot for chinchillas, there my wife's really though. They do make really good pets, completely different from other rodents. Spending time with them and handling them makes a big difference. The main thing to look out for is teeth really, they can suffer from bad alignmentand roots can grow up into eye sockets etc. We've lost a couple of chinchillas to this unfortunately. They live quite a while for a rodent aswel 10+ years. Any other stuff you wanna now just ask. |

Sounds quite nasty, how do you avoid the tooth problem. Did you get your chinchillas from a breeder? Ive heard bad things about shop bought ones. |

Yeah it aint pretty. Our initial Chinchilla we got from P@H years ago and hes still fine and never had any problems. The one we paired him up with was from a breeder and developed problems years later and then her offspring did aswel. I think its luck of the draw to be honest. I know you can get pedigrees which you pay abit more for and generally they dont seem to have as many health issues. I think its like anything though, its probably best to go to a breeder and see the parents etc. As for prevention of teeth issues, its the same as rabbits really, just cut them down/dremel them now and again at the vets. They generally dont cope well with anesthetic, so ingrowing teeth cant really be dealt with very well. Dont let me put you off though, teeth problems are rare, but its just the worse case scenario. |
