Hey guys,
I'm putting together my set up and was wondering what you thought about lighting. I live somewhere that has no natural light so I was going to put in a UV strip that is about half the size of the viv at the hot end. That way there would be some dark at the cool end. So it would be more like the outside world, and I would manually provide a night/day cycle by turning it on in the day and off at night. Me and the OH do this with our goldfish atm.
I just think that having no proper light cycle or access to UV couldn't possibly be good for the snake even if they are nocturnal. Do you think a 2% daylight would be enough?
Also, should I get a guard? I was going to. It does mean I can't get a reflector as it wouldn't fit. Do you think I need a reflector?
Sorry for the Spanish Inquisition, I just wanted some advice as apposed to making a guess and getting it wrong. Thanks x |

yes if there's no natural light a 2% tube will be spot on for giving the day/might cycle. no need for a reflector as it's just for light an not the uv like with lizard's,yes you will need a guard for it |

After trying led's i'd go for them, tried them for extra light in another cage that already has uvb's/basking bulb etc etc.It didn't really work out :P
But i think there perfect for cages/vivs without any other form of lighting.ie a wooden snake viv, where it's the only form of white light. There very very bright, can be hidden within the cage and alot cheaper then a 2.0 uvb and starter :) |

But don't they need some UV for nutrition? I mean, we need UV, surely they'd be better off with a UV bulb? If not I'll go for LED. It was health I was worried about. |

Yeah sure and benefit from a normal light cycle. But nowhere near the needs of other reptiles.
Lets say you use a 2.0 uvb,and said 2.0 is mounted on the roof of a two foot tall viv. Then said snake hides under a wooden/exo terra type hide all day.Only coming out after the lights are off.
He's getting nearly nothing uvb wise,as the strip only works like 30 cm down, plus it has to pass through a hide etc etc etc..
So in other words, your expensive starter and strips are doing no more then a £25 led kit :)
More powerful strip, might cause more problems to the snakes health. |

I have two strips in with my corn, mainly for lighting. But he sits up on his tree,so he's under the lights etc.Same as one of my hogs,he has a 2.0 uvb strip, but mainly as the tanks already had lighting hoods :)
I wouldn't buy all that for a royal thats never out,and won't get any of the uvb from said lights anyway hehe. |
