i am wondering how long a snake will be lethargic for before a shed? reason being i understand that pythons aren't racing snakes but still fairly active, but for the last 3 days mine has stayed in his hide. I have been checking on him and his eyes have a blue sheen when light goes on them which i understand is the beginning of the shedding process, but i don't want to go in there like a bull in a china shop... any help and guidance appreciated thanks in advance

Royal pythons are the laziest inactive snakes I've come across. Don't be too surprised if you hardly ever see one.

It does sound like he is coming up to a shed though, it can take upto 2 weeks from first signs to them stripping off. But normally around a week.eyes and body will go cloudy for a few days, then it clears but they still look a bit dull for a few days and then they'll shed their skin, rolling it off like a sock.they are best left alone during this time but minor disturbance to have a look under the hide won't do any harm.

It will help him shed easier if you up the humidity. Pop a damp cloth on top of the warm hide, put his water in the warm end and maybe give him a damp moss hide too. That should be plenty enough to help him.

hi @ all, had to take him to my local herp shop (coast to coast) in darlington, as his shed was in tatters. After a warm bath and a lot of pooping he was cleaned up and shed clear. Have now fed him after his ordeal and he has eaten the mouse arse end first, is this ok or does he run the risk of regurging?? any info gladly accepted cheers

Had my royal 6 weeks, fed each week, had a full shed, still no poop. It's my first snake and I query and question everything. They are just not as easy to read as a dog or cat and seem very very different to the corns I know hehe

My Normal Male eats his rats tail end first 90% of the time. It takes him ages but he's never regurged.

I'm sorry the shed didn't go too well this time. It doesn't mean that the next one will be difficult though so don't worry. I'd up the humidity at the first hint of going blue next time.
Eating their food the wrong way round is quite common, especially for young snakes, again nothing to worry about.
I'm sure they have an extra sense that knows exactly which nerve to tweak and worry their owners!!

thanks for easing my mind, i suppose their not guaranteed to get it "right" every time
I will definitely keep a better eye on him when he goes blue, and I now have him on orchid bark, so he is easier to mist up when needed

I've just got in from work to see my boy has had a bad shed so in the bath he goes later! And really don't worry about not seeing them out and about, I can weeks without seeing any of mine out of their hides, of their own accord anyways, I get them out a couple of times a week if they like it or not :)

I got my first royal about 18 months ago and I still question a lot of things and panic over nothing so don't feel like your the only one :)
