Im looking at getting a viv 4ft wide, 3ft high and 2ft long. Will a 150w bulb suffice or will I need something more powerful? Cheers

I use a 150w in my 4x2x2 which is in a very cold kitchen and it struggles but since weather has started to get warmer its working fine!

Cheers for the quick reply. I will go for a bigger wattage then. Viv is going in a fairly warm room, but probs best to go for a 200 - 250w so it isnt struggling.

with a 3ft high viv you would want to put in a basking shelf as you will struggle to get the hot spot on the floor due to the height.

i have a 150w heating a 4x2x2 which does the job as my room is fairly warm(usually 21c ish) but will be changing it to a 200w so the bulb doesn't have tot work as hard.

i would put a 250w in there but the place i get my ceramic's on ebay haven't had any recently

I've seen some 250w on swell reptiles. Can you buy basking shelfs or would I have to make one? If I have I make one I might go for a 2ft high one instead. I know, lazy right?

Depends on how hot the room is,how many vents etc etc.

what's going in the 4ft viv?As you could make a basking shelf/area to fit the setup.

You would have to make one of screw some branches in place so the snake can sit under the bulb an set the hot spot on the branches.
What snake is it for? An just out of interest how much do swell charge for a 250w ceramic?

Swell have an exo terra for £18.49 or their own brand for £15.99 but its currently out of stock. Those trixie shelves look pretty cool. I was planning on having a large bit of java wood screwed in, so I could maybes try and get that under the heater for basking. Im really fussy with the shape of java wood so will probably take me a while to get lol.
This is going to be for some form of Boa. Will start looking once I have my setup complete. Id like a more unusual one like a madagascan ground boa or something, but they are so hard to find. TBH I would just be happy with a common BCI. Depends what I find when I start looking.

that's not a bad price i was expecting it to be much higher than that, i get 200 an 250w ceramic's on ebay for about £10 been using the same one's for about a year now.

if you have a higher viv the you could look at crawl cay dwarf boa's as their semi arboreal

I do love the markings on the crawl cay, but I reckon im only ever going to have space for one big snake, and by big I mean around 8ft (none of this silly retic business. where do you people actually put them?). I guess what Im saying is I want a snake a bit bigger than a crawl cay as its probably my only chance. Male BCI would probs be ideal. Male bcc would prob be okay too.
As i understand most boas like a good climb anyway, so should be okay. I could get a 6x2x2 for a lot cheaper, I just thought the extra height would be good for viewing.

i plan on 2 6x3x2 viv's for the afrock an burm when their adult but will go bigger if needed.

yes boa's do like to climb a bit, my male if 7ft an has load's of room in his 5x2x2 just need to get him some big branches to go in there.
would need some strong an well secured branches in a high display viv.
personally i would go for the 6x2x2 with plenty of branches/shelves to climb on

yeah, sounds good. I wish I could find a 6x2x3 or a 5x2x3. I really want that extra foot of height for putting big branches in. I guess it is going to create heating issues though so probably best to go without. I wish viv exotic did some bigger sizes. Im not as keen on the x-tend range they do coz i dont like having the pillar in the middle. I just like having a compatible cabinet as well. For me, its all about creating a good viewing experience as well as a great environment for the snake to explore. So my key features are:
1. Big glass front, no pillars.
2. Viv raised off ground so I can actually see into it without lying on the floor.
3. Plenty of decoration inside and a nice big log to climb.
Doesnt seem like much to ask, but ive spent hours browsing the internet and I am really struggling!! Think im just too fussy.

This was the original idea:
http://www.reptiles.swelluk.com/reptile-supplies/vivariums-416/vivarium-cabinet-combinations-460/vivexotic-viva-arboreal-large-with-cabinet-oak-45--334999.html
But its not even 4ft! so a boa will probably out grow it in no time. If they did this in 5x2x3 I would be over the moon!!

with a 6ft an to be honest a 5ft it's good to have a support in the middle as they tend to bow a bit when i get some new glass for william's 5x2x2 im going to fit a support an get 4 smaller panes of glass cut, don't want a huge support will put one in that's say 2" wide.
volly is a viv builder who's on fb an will make viv's to what size you want but he is shutting shop for a few month's soon so may have to wait a while but worth dropping him a pm
https://www.facebook.com/volly1?fref=ts

this is what i did with byron's viv just to give you an idea, it's a 4x2x2 but i have it setup so that the hot spot is on the branches under the ceramic

Jonny have you thought about the vivexotic modular vivs they come in 34" cubes so two would make just under 6ft long with just shy of 3ft height and depth

Yeah think I might have to go for them. I wasn't keen with them having the pillar in the middle, but I guess it's not too restricting and does provide extra support. Carl, did you mention there be a custom viv builder at team reptiles? That might also be worth lookin into.
Cheers for all the help

Im going tomorrow to get some gerbils or multis (depending on what they reckon are better for getting royals to eat). I'll ask while im there. I'll no doubt be eyeing up the boas while im there.

I had VERY specific requirements for my vivarium. There was only one thing for it, get the note pad out and sketch what I wanted, then get technical and plan it out. Then take a list of measurements and a cut diagram to B&Q (they weren't impressed), then it was as simple as fixing it all together, painting, varnishing, and fixing in some decor and heating. I'm designing another 2 at the moment.

Exactly what I wanted at a fraction of the cost

Every vivarium is well kitted out.
