Hi guys,
New to the forum and just about to get my first (of many??)...
The Royal Python I am getting is around 4 months old and about 20cm.
I have just bought a setup which consists of a Komodo 48x31x18cm Plastic Terrarium, Prorep Heat Mat, Orchid Bark, Habba Hut (large) for heated area and a Komodo Wooden Hide (medium) for cooler end, Komodo thermometer and hygrometer plus a small water bowl.
I'm also about to buy a Habistat Pulse Reptile Vivarium Thermostat 600w.
I've been chatting with Kelfezond briefly today and he's been very helpful! Just wanted to check that everything is cool with my set-up. I'm not picking him up until next Friday so wanted to get it all in place so that I can iron out any problems.
Hope it all sounds good, any suggestions would be very welcome!
Cheers,
Bram |

All sounds good, just a couple of tips that arent neccessary, but good to know:
Aspen is much nicer than orchid bark!! Orchid bark is mainly used for snakes that need much higher humidity. But if you like it you can use it.
You will probably find the small water bowl too small. I have found most royals to be shy of water, but its best to give them the option to actually get into their water dish. Some use this to either cool down or help with a shed.
Plastic terrariums dont hold humidity, this is because they have far too many holes in them. If your Royal is struggling with a shed i.e. has stuck skin, you may struggle to keep the humidity up for more than a few minutes. You can solve this by covering up most of the holes leaving a strip at either end. You wont need to do this unless your snake actually has a bad shed.
And finally, welcome to the addiction!! Looking forward to pics of your baby. They are always cutest when they are that small, with their totally out of proportion heads!! lol |

Hi,
Thanks johnnyc for the information. I was thinking that the higher level of humidity from the orchid bark may counteract the amount of holes in the plastic terrariums... Would it just be better to take it back and get a wooden boxed one?
I have a bit of time until the little man arrives so I am going to set it all up tonight and take some good pictures so you guys can have a look and give me your opinions, also it means that it can be up and running for around a week so I can check daily levels and see if it is holding.
I really don't want him having a bad shed or struggling with it. I do have two hides and was going to get some Sphagnum moss for before he does start to shed so that should bring up the humidity level up, I will definitely get a larger bowl today so I have a choice.
Once again, thanks for your help. I am sure I will be asking more questions very soon!

No, you don't need to take it back, it should keep you going for a while, but will need upgrading eventually. I'm sure your aware of the minimum enclosure rule people generally use. The snake should be no longer than the length+width of enclosure. So terrarium should be fine until your royal is about 2ft. As for shedding, you can just put a tea towel over the terrarium when your snake goes blue to cover up most of the holes. Obviously leave a few for breathing lol. |

Okay thanks!
I think I will cover the back, sides and top with a dark towel once he arrives to give him time to settle in, hopefully this willwork well when he sheds also.
Hopefully once its set up all the levels will be okay.
I literally cannot wait to get him now!! |

I use bark in one of my vivs :) helps with the humidity.
As for your rub,I wouldn't worry to much about the humidity.Just give it a spray when he's coming into shed. Be sure to block up that huge hole Komodo give you for the probes etc :) As you don't want him getting stuck :) |

Thanks boomslang!
I think I have overloaded on information... I've read back about 9 pages on stuff I was worried about.
Any chance someone could give me the top 5-10 things that need to be right so I have everything covered?
Any help is much appreciated.
I think I am gonna give myself a break and digest the information!! |

Reptile Kingdom...
http://reptilekingdom.co.uk/
I've been chatting to a guy there who seems to have been very helpful (I realise every snake is different as is every owner) but he seems to know his stuff and breeds his own personal collection.
Is this okay as I have one reserved.
He actually has mites as they all do and I have to wait a week before they will let him go.

oh right :P everyone of what they're selling has mites?
Well here's tip 1 then,Check the snake over when you get him :) check to make sure it's healthy,Due to having mites, ask about its feeding schedule.
You want to make sure he's feeding fine :) |

Hi mate.
I did ask, they believe that the group of snakes they bought had mites and now all of their stock in the rack do.
I asked about feeding and he said he's been feeding him up for me. ;O)
He says he likes his snakes big and fat!
Thanks for the tip... I am picking him up next Friday but will pop in on Wednesday/Thursday to check the little man is still feeding well.
Tip 1 is noted.
I was more looking for tips on his home, steps to take when getting him home etc...
Thanks again though!! |

I said that as sometimes they can stop eating. If they have had/have mites, and you really don't want a non feeder.
So its best to check and ask before you get him.make sure he's all cool.
Seems like you have the rub all setup already,Are you running the rub already for him?
When you get him home, put him inside and leave him to settle for upto a week.ie no handling him or anything. Then try and feed after that week. |

Hi buddy.
I'm gonna set it up once my habistat comes over the weekend.
I will take pics and post them up so you guys can correct me if I'm wrong.
Hopefully it will be up and running for around 3 days before he gets in his new home!

Yep, one is smaller than the other.
I will use the smaller one over the hotter end and switch when he gets a bit bigger. If the smaller one is no good I will buy another.
I'm thinking about getting some artificial plants too? Plus a bigger water bowl.
I know pics speak louder than words so once its up and running I'm sure you guys will help out.
:o)
I really appreciate all your help mate.

Use it until you can't add bigger hides etc, then buy a normal rub :) then a viv if you plan to go that way.
Also yes,pictures would be great :) |

Will get then Monnday I think... Unless the habistat turns up on Saturday.
I am thinking of taking the plastic terra back as it has 4 clears sides and I'm not too happy with the way that it secures, just plastic clips.
Plus I know that humidity isn't the be all and end all but there are so many holes its unreal!
Will have a think and decide later.
Thanks again.

Most rub type things, have more or less clear sides. It's not something you really need to worry about.
The plastic lid is made from jelly bendy cheap plastic,I agree with you there hehe. But it clips on ok and he would'nt be albe to push the lid of.

The holes will let in humid air from the room. Its on a mat,so you don't have a bulb sucking the humidity away.the humidity in that rub shouldn't drop below an ok percentage.
The royal will be fine, nothing you can't handle at shed time, with afew mistings :) |
