Hi guys,
I am getting my first Royal Python next week and have been telling a few people about it as I am very excited.
I'm pretty sure that everyone has had the same reaction as I got?!
"Your getting a snake!!" Oh my god...
Most reactions have been this and some to the degree of "if you get a snake then I will NOT be coming round" a couple have said they would come and see him but wouldn't touch which I think is fine.
It really annoys me as I have been researching them for a while now and the feeling I get is that they are docile creatures who hide away most of the time.
My question is this...
Is there anywhere (website) that can help to change these narrow minded idiots or anything that I can say or do to explain to them how amazing they are??
Any help?

You'll start off like this - a kind of fire that rages in you making you determined to educate the uneducated.. Unfortunately give it a year or two and the b*****ds will grind you down sometimes it's easier just to become the "crazy snake guy" lol.
A little while back a lad online made a post about wanting a snake but his mother wouldn't let him for the same reasons most people think you're crazy for getting one. I still have family to this day that wont come over to my house on the basis of snakes.
And I hear that infamous my royal will kill/eat me story at least once a month, which now I just shake my had at and laugh |

| I still get people saying "oh no what did you get a snake for" and generally being quite rude about my choice of pet. I just smile at their ignorance and those who said they won't come to my house haven't been persuaded otherwise lol. |

I actually posted that video on my friends FB page to educate her a bit more, but alas I think it fell on deaf ears!I will re post it on anyone's who is that ignorant as many times as I can until I get a result!
TBH I am getting to that age where I am quite happy these ignorant muppets won't visit... Makes for a quiet life.
The main thing is that the wife is on board and the little man is excited, He's nearly 4 and I am trying educate and prepare him for the new arrival next week.
It just really annoys me that people are so narrow minded!

Its just ridiculous isn't it?! Like the Royal is laying in wait for a scared client to come round and then he/she will break lose from the Viv, slide under the door and make a bee-line for its prey so that it can instantly EAT THEM!!! Mwah haa ha ha!! |

Just forget about the non snake people and stick with us crazy folk....we've got it sussed!! 
Seriously I'm sure we all know what you mean and we've all heard the stories about our snake measuring us up for size, not going to sleep in case it gets you etc, etc. 
It would be impossible to educate everyone so just let them work it out for themselves or stay ignorant.  |

I have had many friends and family members run away from my house after they see my snakes. But in the same act a few have began to bond with then after such a huge fear they now hold and ask to get my snakes out.
But my way of thinking is that my German shepherd I have could rip your face off but you happy to stroke, cuddle and play catch with Him. Just because snakes have a bad press about them because no one can actually sit there and talk about the upside to owning reptiles. Any one would own a dog being from a staf to a poodle but all have the same intentions of reptiles. They all have a comfort zone with us humans. If we break that they react back to it. But we have learnt to accept that how we bring up our pets, can ultra how they can behave. Which I feel is the same with snakes. With plenty of handling they learn to adapt to us. Obviously of we disturb them when we no not to. It is out own fault we don't take certain procautions.
I hate how they have a bad name and to all my friends and family I'm trying to make a change to the way people think. The amount of people I've had day no to touching because 'there slimey' is just a fine example of people not knowing the truth.
There is a local group to me called 'snakes alive' who do alot of school based work, brownies clubs etc many children based party's and activities and I think this is wonderful as it give the younger generation a chance to see the species in an up close manner is a controlled environment. And I hope they can make a difference with how people think.
But hey, we are all crazy snakes guys. I love it the mother in law won't come round because of it :) |

Oh the joys of the snake rumour mill.
I've heard allsorts but the one that really annoys me and is often said in the news is are they/they are poisonous. Not only is it a load of rubbish but its also the wrong word, no snake is poisonous, not even a rattlesnake, they are very venomous though. |

I'm surprised there isn't more celebrities with snakes that campaign for them.
TBH you don't really hear much either way so if there were more people out there telling and showing people how amazing they are then maybe opinions would change?!
In the meantime I will take the flak and enjoy the little man!!

There is way to much media scare mongering with snakes, I just try and educate the ones that are willing to listen and learn.

| I was picking my boy up from school today and one of the mothers said to me you keep snakes don't you, I said yes I do her reply was, horrid things that are cold feel like slime and will bite you. I said to her that's no way to talk about her husband, she gave me a very nasty look I said to her well I don't know you're husband so I'll just day something horrid about him just like you just did about snakes. she paused for thought and said you're right I should not judge what I no nothing about. |
