I have been using a dimming stat on one of my heat mats for a few weeks and noticed the temperature isn't very steady at all (can fluctuate between 29-35!) after some googling I noticed the habistat dimming thermostat cannot be used with a load under 40w!
I would have thought that my mat simply wouldn't run if its under 40w in that case, and not just fluctuate dramatically. Could it be only the old models that have a 40w min and I just have a faulty one? (mine is only 3 months old)
Anyway if my stat is fine im just weighing up the options between buying a pulse stat and chucking the dimmer in a draw, or putting the dimmer on my viv running a 200w ceramic and pinching the pulse from there. Does it cost much more to run a ceramic on a dimmer rather than a pulse? as a pulse is not constantly using power whereas a dimmer is...
I always use pulse stats for mats and ceramics, been all good so far.

Yea I do I only bought it as I was running a spot on it a while ago. I don't really want to use it if it's going to cost considerably more in electric compared with a pulse though
Pulse is an obsolete tech. Newer stats just have on off or dimmer. Dimmers hold just as steady as a pulse stat, the only difference is a dimmer can run light emitting heat sources (basically runs everything). It's fluctuating because it should t be used with the wrong rated heat source. If it was over its max wattage it would just stop working but under then the mat is being overloaded.
