Hey guys just a quick question,do all of you cool your pythons in preparation for breeding? Or are the ambient temp changes during winter enough to encourage follicle growth?
Ive done my fair share of reading on the subject but theres jsut some things better to find out from experienced hands ;)

| I've done a lot of reading up on breeding Royals and found mixed opinions on cooling. Some seem to cool, some seem to rely on the lower ambient temps provided by our winter weather. This is my first time breeding Royals and I've cooled a few degrees and allowed for the lower ambient temps. |

Cool, so in theory you could start cooling whenever you are ready to breed and not when people normally do it if that makes sense, since you are controlling their environment?

| Correct, I think, that's why some breeders end up with clutches all year round as essentially they've got a year round rolling breeding programme. As you said, you can control the conditions; drop the temps and increase the hours of darkness during the day. |

I just rely on the ambient temp night time drop
Seems to work for me
But there more ways to skin a cat ;) |

Cheers for the feedback guys, 3 of my females are 1400g+ atm and all still feeding weekly without fail atm, so im gonna keep feeding until they are over 1500g then cool them maybe, or would there be a better way to go about it? Thoughts? :p

I have a female pastel here just over 1500 gram and I'm waiting for next season
If she went I may get 3-5 egg this year
Or if I wait and she goes next season I may get 6-9 as she will be much bigger then
And after she lays she will still be a nice weight although baggy lol |

| I've bred females at 1300g fine before but base it judged on their length and shape as well, at 1300g my fire was filled out nicely but this year at 1300 my het pin looks slim. |

Decided to pair my pastel butter male with my lemon pastel female last night and woke to found this which looks like a decent lock which has been going on all day! I will try the male with my spider next week to see what happens.
Currently being 1450g i was going to wait until she was slightly heavier but from the reading Ive done most people say they eat right up until ovulation so being so i guess that shouldn't be a problem?.
Questions: Now i haven't cooled any of my ball pythons, ambient temps are the only variable as i don't have a dedicated rep room. Am i right in thinking getting 1 solid lock every few weeks until ovulation occurs should work? I haven't palpated any of my females so yea I couldn't tell you if they have started to build or anything like that.
Thoughts and reply's appreciated as always

| Sorry just another quick question i cant seem to find the answer too anywhere, will a female royal accept the male if she doesn't have folicles or the male be interested in the female if she doesn't? ( Will they still lock if there's no chance of eggs if that makes sense?) Thanks! |
