I have just moved my Royal into her first 3ft vivarium and she seems to be loving the extra space and out exploring a lot more! My one question relates to whether or not I need a guard for my ceramic heat bulb - the guy in the shop I bought it from said it wasn't necessary and he didn't use them but not I have felt how hot it gets, I am worried that it could burn the snake. Wondered what other peoples views were - I will probabaly play safe and get one fitted to be safe Thanks |

Yes, get one, a thousand yes! Very important for a ceramic as they do get stupidly hot. |

I agree. I think there's a thread on here called, "why you need a guard." There's a pic of a royal wrapped around the guard. |

A guard is an absolute must!!
I quite often find one of mine wrapped around the guard in the morning, would hate to imagine what the result would be if he was on the bulb itself. |

what they ^^^^ said. Also, if the shop keeper does not use or advise others to use them, I think you should print off some pictures of the results of no guard to show him, there are always plenty to find on tinternet. |

If the shopkeeper says they aren't necessary, then they shouldn't be running a shop. Or a bath... lol
I've been fiddling with ceramics recently. Want to know how hot they get to touch? Being impatient, I unscrewed a 100W one that had been on solid for a few hours. I did this using a jaycloth that had been folded over many times to protect my hand. It actually burned the cloth and was still incredibly hot. 10 mins later it was still almost too hot to handle with bare hands. I removed a 150W one using a thick sponge, and it still had a small amount of moisture in it from where I'd used the sponge to clean something earlier. It was instantly flashed into steam.
I reckon you could probably cook bacon and eggs on a ceramic that is up to temperature. Anyone suggesting a guard is not necessary is frankly either a liar, an idiot, or hasn't got a clue what they are talking about! |

For a bit of information on just how hot a ceramic heat bulb will get I was changing a 100W bulb for a higher rated one and I switched it off for fifteen minutes, I then touched the sides to see that it was cool, unscrewed it holding the sides but as the bulb dropped from the holder into my palm I became instantly aware that the bottom was still hot, so hot it burnt my hand and when I dropped the bulb it burnt a spiral into the carpet. |
