this came up on the animal_rehoming_uk yahoo site that Anne mentioned a while ago:
for sale a six month old corn snake and vivarium plymouthþ: i have a six month old corn snake and vivarium with heat matt also hide and drinking bowl £80.00 ono
curious as to whether a stat was included, or whether he wasn't selling the stat (or if he even had one... i admit it, i am a cow now i know what can go wrong without a stat) i emailed him: does it come with or without thermostat?
this is the reply i received:
hi it does not have a thermostat the temp holds between 75 to 85 which is the correct temp for the corn snake thanks for the enquiry.
also today he dropped the price to £60. im annoyed about the lack of stat,in this particular case, is it as bad as i think it is? should i reply to his email at all, or just leave it? |

here's what i am sending: Hi, i realise that as you are selling your corn you wont rush out and buy a thermostat, but perhaps you can advise the new owners that they will need one, regardless of the temps the mat holds.
heat mats can go faulty, and overheat.
there are also other factors to think of, like;
is the mat in the viv or outside? (if it's inside it can be a fire hazard if it gets wet- i.e with urine or spilled water or if a more heavily bodied snake rests upon it.
If it's outside on a wooden viv the heat won't penetrate.
If it's outside on a glass viv the glass can crack if it overheats.
If it's outside a plastic tank, the plastic can melt if it over heats) if there is no airspace between the mat and the viv this can crate a fire hazard.
substrate depth and type (can the corn bury to be closer to the mat in a place where you are not measuring the temperature?)
What you are measuring the temperature with, the dial type ones are notoriously inaccurate and often you can buy accurate, digital ones from somewhere like ebay, for example, for the same price as a dial thermometer.
the following is a link to a forum where this matter was discussed and tested.
http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/snakes/174166-do-i-really-need-thermostat.html
a snake can get seriously injured from being near an unstatted heatmat, not to mention the fire risk to your home should the worst happen.
mat stats can be bought second hand at cheap prices from the likes of ebay, and forums similar to the one above, also there is the forum/website http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk who have a wealth of information.
As i said to begin with, i realise you will not be interested in buying one now, but for the sake of the snake please mention it to the new owner.
Also, please do not take offense at my email, i am merely offering some advice.
I realise advice from pet shops or friends is not always the best advice, having almost killed my royal python due to not having a thermostat and being given poor advice, so please do not feel like i am having a dig at you, and please double check my advice on either of the forums i have pointed you towards.
regards,
cat. i will be hitting the send button in a minute as i am going to bed, so any changes that should be made, be quick lol. |

I read a post on the darkside a while back about some one setting up a rescue centre.
from wot i understand, they get inspected before they are allowed to be recognised/named as a rescue home and stats are a must...
Unfortunately I know, and have heard of alot of shops that dont sell/use/recommend stats... |
