I am picking up the 05 chick eater tomorrow, from what i can gather she is underweight, probably due to always having been fed chicks...
her weight currently sits at a 1000g
obviously i will be trying to get her onto rats asap...
Should i go with seven day feeds with her or 5 day feeds?
in my head i am thinking she will need to be taken steady till her belly gets used to bigger prey and stuff or am i wrong? |

Id go with every 10 days personally at 1000g, maybe leave her even longer if you're trying to get her hungry to convert. |

Hmmmm chick's make a hell of a mess when they come out - well they do in kings, not so sure what will happen with a royal. Hopefully all will be well. You can make up for the amount of calcium in a chick by dusting the back end with calcium carbonate (the stuff used for frogs) - There's not as much as with a mouse or rat.
Try the Chick Jacket like said, sometimes just scenting with a chick will do the trick. We had a nightmare getting Nagini off them, but you may be lucky. Good luck! |

If i was you I wouldnt feed her a chick on its own until she starts losing a lot of weight if ever...
as you know you need to get her on to either rats, mice or gerbil/multis , it may take a while but i would resist. try either chick jacket or try getting a chick wing and dislocating the rats jaw and pushing it in... |

A good smack. You dont have to be gentle, just avoid breaking the bones away from the joints. |

A good firm push to get the wing in should do it...dont worry it wont hurt the rat so get rammed in... |

Like daz says, chicks are fattening, if she doesn't eat for a few weeks while trying different methods of scenting/disguising rats and mice it may be a good thing. Although as most Royals go at least she's eating something! If can get her onto rat/mice the calcium shouldn't be needed at all, and she'll live a lot longer if there isn't as much fat in her diet.
It's the yolk sack (that the baby chicken has eaten in the egg) that causes the fat, you can remove the contents of the stomach but it's rather a messy job. More worth while to keep trying the rats until hungry enough.

that sounds way yukky...
well if push came to shove i could give her a live feed, but dont want to go that route unless i really have to...
we will see when it comes to feeding.. |

I would agree with the scenting as a first try.
I would go with large weaners. |

well i have her..
she is thin, not that big for an 05 probably around the four foot mark maybe a bit bigger...but if she has been fed chicks then i suppose thats why.
will it stunt her growth not having been fed properly..?
but she is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo lovely...bless her..
she is away now for a week then i will have a proper look at her..
put her straight back into her viv as she was trying to get out of her pillow case the whole way home, so i figure she is stressed right now..... |

Could be she was a non feeder so they tried the chick route to get her going and got her addicted (that's how it normally happens)
Give her a week to calm down a bit then try with a rat (without scenting at first) you never know she may just surprise you. If that fails try a scented one a few days after. |

that was my plan with her anyway...lol..
she was kept in a shed with five other royals, so i dont have a clue as to why she eats chicks, but i will do my best for her anyway...
Thanks Lewy and everyone else for your input, i appreciate it;-) |
