hello gud evening ive neva joined one of these forums but i care for my new baby royal python so much i thought it was the least i cud do. im so happy after purchasing him and he seems 2 b thriving despite the salespersons lack of knowledge,my main concerns are if i should vigilant about cooking or skunk fumes around him,it may sound silly but im genuinly interested, also is there a surefire way of distinguishing sexes and ages of these snakes as i said the garden centre was very vague. all the rest of the neccessary info i have obtained from the web but these issues i am struggling with so if this post works and sum1 can help me with these tedious questions i wud be very grateful, thank u |

i wouldnt smoke in the same room as your snake be it weed or tabacco. some snakes only have 1 lung i believe pythons have retained both but are prone to respertory disease.
there is no defient way of telling how old it is but with a picture and the wieght of it we can guesstimate. |

thats the thing with royals they wont show there stressed while being handled. over handerling can cause them not to eat. i wouldnt handle more than 15mins 2-3 time a week max. how long have you had him? is he feeding?

I'd say by that length its maybe only around 4-8 months old but that a guess the weight would help. as for handling you find that every one here has there different routines or rules for handling ranging from 20mins a week to 20mins a day. yes over handling can cause your snake to stress( especially with young snakes) and then stop eating. which you don't want. as for sexing the only sure way would be to bring your snake to a reptile vet to be probed( this does carry risks as this procedure can sometimes damage a snake) there are certain things you can of guess with. Females are commonly said to have a shorter tail( from vent to tip) and males are suppose to have a small bulge behind there vent. this things are not always true and hard to judge in smaller snakes.
look forward to seeing some pics of him/her. welcome to the forum.

the spurs dont always work as my proven female has bigger spurs than my proven male. |

thanks alot guys ive had him a month and hes eaten about 5 times, im not that worried about the sex i certainly wudnt put him thru any probing! thanks anyway,i handle and let him have a controlled explore for an hour after work but after reading ur comments maybe hes having too much freedom,is the main growth in the first few years or is it spread evenly over his life? thx a million. |

If youre snake is eating well, and being handled you are doing something right, not all Royals are as fussy as others ;)
In my younger days I would be suprised if my old Royal wasn't as high as I was, then again, that was MANY MANY years ago, lol
Back then I think the polite way to say it is that husbandry wasn't as vigilant as it is now. The main things to watch out for are deodorants/furniture polishes/and pine cippings. |

Hi Leroy, welcome to the forum.
Probing done properly will not hurt your Royal and age wise either a late '08 or one of this year's babies.
I agree with the above about not smoking in the same room. |

Welcome I wouldnt smoke anywhere near any of my animals (besides it makes your house STINK) and dont forget to wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling.
Glad your royal is eating well and sociable. Same as mine .. its great isnt it? |
