Ok, i have seen pastels and pastels..

but how do you know when you buy one that it will not lose its pastel coloring when it is older as some i have seen seem to...

how do you avoid this?

or is it a natural occurrence?

It is quite natural, most will do it. Lemon Pastels are less likely to brown out as much and if you can afford a Super Pastel then they don't seem to (probably because they have 2 Pastel genes).

Be careful of people selling normal pastels as 'lemon' just because they're bright as a hatchling, have a look at the Pastel parent and see how they look.

if i got one would i be better going Black Pastel?

or a Graziani or VPI or just from a really good breeder?

but does that guarantee they will hold colour?

Black Pastel are very different.

Not sure about Graziani, Nerd's 'Lemon' Pastel is supposed to be the best at holding it's colour though I believe.
