no views, well mine is that if a cat owner wants to let their cat out to confront a burm in someones private property then they have to take responsabilty for it,cats are killers too they kill people's prized koi and birds and numerous other wildlife,do that mean that they should be liecenced too.The owner has put a leghthy reply at the bottom of the artical stating what happened

What the differance between a snake killing a cat and a dog killing one? Would you say dogs need licsences (not a clue how to spell that)? Frankly a snake would have done a more humane job of dispatching it anyway

I think cats are evil and deserve being burm food! I've just mowed the lawn and found 4 (YES 4!!!!!) cat poos in the garden.

Dirty beasts!

The cat has gone into someones private garden, its not like the snake went into someone elses garden. How many times has a dog killed a cat, a cat killed a bird, fish etc. Does that mean all animals with the potential to kill should be licenced.

"Mr Wadey, 44, said: "We don't know whether Wilbur stumbled across the snake and it was an opportunistic kill, or if the snake was actively hunting him"
Yeah, like the snake was jumping over fences to get the cat.

I feel sorry for them losing a pet, but the fact is that if the cat had stayed in its own garden it'd still be alive and well. If it had been killed by a labrador I doubt it would have made the papers. The python was minding her own business until a furry thing that looked very much like dinner came poking around in her garden, I can't blame her for chomping it.

As a cat and snake owner i find it quite a sad story. At the end of the day the cat is someones pet. What i do find quite irresponsible is that someone can leave a 13ft Python alone unsupervised in their garden. Also the comments of the cat has gone into someone else garden seem a bit pointless, do those of you who have posted this believe that a cat really knows which garden he is or is not welcome in.

I own two cats, and accept that if they're going to roam free then they run the risk of being run over, mauled by a dog or a fox or otherwise coming to an untimely demise. Leaving the snake unattended was possibly irresponsible, but for all we know the garden might have been plenty secure enough to keep the snake from escaping and he could have just nipped inside for the toilet. The tone of the article was hardly impartial so if the snake had been secure they were hardly likely to mention it.

I dont agree with people letting their cats out to run about whenever they want to. Its downright irresponsible and my car bonnet is an absolute mess from cats jumping up onto it for a bit of heat at night, scratched to bits. You wouldnt let any other pet come and go as it pleased so why is it ok for cats?

I've just read the comments attached to that article and am gobsmacked at the idocy(?) of some of them.

Yes it is a shame their cat has been killed, but as people here have already said cars, dogs, foxes, other cats, etc all claim the lives of cats. You couldn't even begin to compare the difference in numbers!

There are people on there comparing this incident to drink driving and public order offences! Do me a favour!!!!

What this is, is an accident. Pure and Simple. No one is actually to blame here, given the evidence available. As previously said we don't why or for how long the snake was unattended, how secure the property was, etc.

One woman has stated on there 'If that snake poked its head one inch over my boundary fence I would chop it. After all I would only be protecting whats mine. Thats nature.'

Surely that is the same thing?!?!?!?!?!

Let me see if I have this right! Your animal on my property, killed=Wrong? My animal 1 inch on property Killed=OK??

A large carnivourous snake eating a smaller animal? Nature?!?!?!

This comment. Brilliant!!!

This is really sad, everybody knows that Cats like to wonder and allowing a snake, which is a PREDATOR to roam around a DOMESTIC rear garden is a terrible thing to do. The snake could have POSSIBLY escaped through a hole and has the potential to CRUSH and KILL a child, or even an adult.

I am uttery disgusted that the SNKAE OWNERS are this irresponsible...

They should have the animal taken away and be fined..

If this was a Dog that had attacked the Cat and killed it, then the owners would have been prosecuted.

I shall joing the cat owners web site in support of their plea.

I feel quite upset and know what it is like to lose a a harmless and adorable cat.

Forgive me but aren't cats predators that are allowed to roam around EVERYWHERE?!?!

The snake could have POSSIBLY escaped through a hole and has the potential to CRUSH and KILL a child, or even an adult.

As possible as this is. What about dogs jumping fences and killing or maiming? How many of the larger breeds are on the dangerous dogs list? You'd be suprised by what isn't!

They should have the animal taken away and be fined..

Yes because this happens to all the cats that wander on to other peoples property and kill fish, rabbits, and birds that were blissfully minding their own business on their own property!

If this was a Dog that had attacked the Cat and killed it, then the owners would have been prosecuted.

As far as I am aware (and I have quite a lot of experience in this area) No dog owner has ever been prosecuted for the killing of a cat on their own property. (I could be wrong)

I feel quite upset and know what it is like to lose a a harmless and adorable cat

HARMLESS? You tell that to the thirteen Koi I lost to a neighbours cat 10 of which were not even eaten, just left to die, and my nieces rabbit.

I'm gonna stop now as I'm ranting.

One more thing.

Bruce Lee once said 'People fear that which they do not understand. Show them the beauty and they will fear no longer.'

He may be on to something there!

I'm sorry but I just saw this one!!!

Xavier has hit the nail on the head, any moron who keeps snakes, spiders etc are dumb chavs, they just have them as status symbols, the same goes for the cretins who own dangerous dogs, they only keep them to match their shell suits

Moron?!?!?!
Dumb Chavs?!?!
Status Symbols?!?!?!
Shell Suits?!?!?!

I have a degree!!!
I wouldn't be seen dead in 'Kappa', 'Burberry', etc I don't go out out get hammered then pick a fight with random strangers. As much as I spend a lot of time in Police stations I'm not a 'Guest' in those 'special bracelets'.
I have a £3500 guitar for a status symbol.
I have never even owned a shell suit!

I'm willing to bet money I'm not the only one on here that can make such statements.

Anyway wouldn't a Tortoise be a better match for a Shell Suit???

Ha ha ha . Chav???? I used to legally eat chavs for breakfast . From what I have read on the websites of these papers most of the comments have been made by people who's only experience of snakes has been watching Anaconda. A few of them would also probably fall into the pigeon hole labelled "mad cat lady" . On my last visit with Sherman to my son's preschool some of the staff were staring, with petrified expressions on their faces, at the holdall Sherman was being transported in. When he came out of his bag their expressions changed from ARRRRRGGGHHH! to Awwwwww. Once the tabloid media gets a hold of these stories they get blown up out of all proportion . I don't agree with the idea of large snakes and lizards being classified as DWA but I do think that some kind of licence needs to be introduced to prevent idiots from buying the bigguns. I'm sure Dave will agree with me that while they are big and do have the potential to do serious damage they are also amazing animals that never cease to surprise us with their intelligence and individual personalities. It would be a shame if media hype made it unaffordable for us to keep the pets we love so much due to too much government interferance.

p.s. When Sherman is being transported in his holdall he is bagged and placed within a large rub with heat pads along one side so he has a hot and a cold side.

Uch...reading about that story and those comments makes me lose faith in humanity...yet again.

I've had that reaction to my own snakes sometimes, but I always try to educate people.
