OK, so, I think she is getting more and more used to being assisted, as this time the "assist" part took mere minutes, if that. So, using the force, here is a quick vid showing how I assist. It's a pity (for the sake of the video) that she took so easily, as it kinda defeats the point in showing people how when they do it so easily. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fL3jmATTMY
Hope that works |

It's really just a case of extreme patience. At first it would take around 20-25 mins before she would eat, spitting it out 20-30 times. |

just re-watched the video, think I will do another but zoom in a bit more, so you can see the rat/snake more. |

Is it worth doing it with her on a flat surface so you have more control, she feels more secure and we get a better look? |

How stressful is this though? I tried to assist one of ours and I have to say he was so strong (older snake) that it became really hard to do. We tried on a flat surface and i had the mouse and his neck whislt my hubby held him down to prevent too much wriggle. After two attempts and him spitting it out, he refused point blank to open his mouth and I didnt want to prise it open in fear of breaking teeth etc. I dont know who was more stressed out in the end me or the poor snake. Perhaps it wouldnt be so bad with a younger snake?? |

Kashie, I have assisted a few older snakes, and it just isn't a nice thing to do. I do know a guy that has assisted his snake for years, the snake is so used to it now it thinks assisting is how it should eat! All you do is pick it up, place the rat infront of it, it opens its mouth, you place it in, it eats, I think it's just a lazy snake tbh. Boo is very easy now, but was a nightmare at first. I honestly think that we worry as much if not more than the snakes get stressed.
I have to stress I am only assisting Boo as she was starting to deteriorate so badly. Once she has a good weight on her I will drop the food size and start to get her striking (never had a royal that liked taking it in the viv but prepared to try) |
