As the title says, I'm giving my lil'un his first feed with me tonight. I am actually getting really excitied about it, but at the same time kinda nervous after reading all the posts about problem feeders!!
He's been with me for 6 days now and hasn't eaten since the 1st due to a shed then a TNT ride to me and finally a settling in period. Last night he was poking his nose out the hide so hopefully he's ready.
I still haven't handled him, so am going to do that for 10 minutes, place him back in the RUB then leave the rat to defrost outside the RUB.
Anyway, completely pointless post really. Just sitting at work thinking about the feed 
I'm sure i'll let you know how it goes either later or tomorrow! |

| It will still be settling in, I really wouldn't handle a Royal before trying to feed it. |

| Good luck with the feed. I wouldn`t handle the royal before a feed unless it was to put it in a seperate feeding rub. |

| Agree with all of the above, but feel that you may have already done it. We all love to handle our royals luckily for them you`ll soon learn to leave them in peace. Hope your feeding goes well. |

Well i completely forgot to pick up the hairdryer I obtained and left it at work, so no feed. Although i also didn't handle him as well so at least it gave me the opportunity to follow your advice about not handling before.
I think he is defo ready for his feed, he's turned part tree snake at the moment and is around the tank a lot, take 2 tonight me thinks |

Well the first feed was almost a perfect success. I defrosted 2 rats as they seemed very small, whilst heating the first i made the mistake of letting go with the tongs to get a better grip, needless to say the hairdryer launched that rat accross the room. So lucky i defrosted 2!!
Gary didn't seem to interested with me dangling the rat outside his hide, so i removed the hide and dangled directly in front of his nose and he struck and ate. I'm going to feed again in 4 days as the rat was small and that was his first feed since the 1st Aug, so happy days!!!! |

My next question is, how soon after they feed can you handle? I still haven't handled Gary and am getting very impatient lol |

| I say 2 days, works for me. If they have had a HUGE meal I leave an extra day to be sure. Imagine being picked up with a weeks worth of food in your belly ;) |

| I guess I was lucky my CB09 hatchling was handled on the second day of me getting her home and then the third and fourth night, she fed that night an hour after I had handled her, she is always handled before her feed and often eats it within minutes of going back into her home. I agree with Karl above I always allow 48 hours after a meal before handling. Incidentally I always defrost by putting the food into a small plastic bag and standing in warm water until defrosted, and then refreshing the water with some more warm water just prior to feeding so that the food has a body temperature to it. |

Ok Robert, way to make a man jealous lol. I will look into the water method as aposed to hairdryer, flying rats wasn't on the agenda!!!
Mines a CF09, the records i was given with him had nothing about handling unfortunately. I have stroked him when he was delievered and he squeaked at me, can only assume this was an attempt at a big bad hiss, he just ended up looking cute tho lol
I was going to handle him properly on delievery but he seemed pretty shook up after the TNT delievery ride so didn't want any extra stress. I think he is just quite a timid fella in general, all will come clear tomorrow on handling numero uno! |

| As hard as it is, it might be better if you wait till your snake has taken three feeds before you handle, that way he will be a bit more established feeding wise... |

Congrats on the feed. As Karl says, leave for 48 hours after feeding before handling.
Btw, did you feed it one or two? - You said one flew across the room, but I presume it was still edible? |

| The water method is definitely the best way, I also wrap it in kitten towel before I serve her dinner just to remove any excess moisture, perhaps I am lucky but she is a good feeder and is not stressed by handling, keep it to a minimum to start with and make sure the environment is quiet and less likely to cause any stress, another good idea is to wash your hands before you handle so that your snake can get used to a scent and associate it with something that is not food and that is non threatening that way when you go to get him/her out it knows who you are and will feel more comfortable, enjoy and be rewarded by your care and attention as it will be reciprocated :) |

No, only the 1. The one that flew accross the room landed in some dust so didn't want to use it.
I am probably going to feed again tonight as you can tell he is hungry. After 7 feeds he is only a measly 61g and 38cm long, so think he could do with some fattening up!! |
