I thought i would post these pictures showing why I think guards are essential.
I know this is a corn snake and not a royal, but all snakes in my opinion have the capability of doing this at some point in there lives...
If this was a unguarded lamp it could have resulted in the corn being burnt very badly if it had decided to wrap round the lamp and stay there...

My Royals regularly wrap themselves around the guards, I wouldn't be without them! |

The day i got my royal i never had a guard as i thought i could get one at the brentwood show but none there. Thought about it then had a mad drive round to get one and glad i did. The first night tilly was wrapping herself around the guard so i wouldnt be without one either. |

I have guards in all vivs, but have NEVER seen any of my snakes go near them. Other than Jacob when he is running away from me. |

Well last night i had very little sleep as one certain royal kept me awake, but just goes to prove that what you posted here Daz is so valid as i found Oscar on three occasions hugging his guard , not for warmth but looking for an exit..
had i not put the guard on he would have had a few burns of that i am sure.. |

Lamps which have been open for 1 hour or more is just like an iron , the result is your royal will wrap around the light bulb and burn themselvesfrom that.So a guard must be used. On the other hand , Can glass tanks with a wire cover also make a guard there cause i want to protect my royals too?Anyone can answer me? |

i dont have any guards i just make sure he is not on the lights before i turn it on and i know he wont go on it whilst its on because i use 60w and when you put your hand quite close to it it is very hot. i also provide other places for him to climb e.g i have a polystyrene background which ive stabbed some silk hanging plants into and he sits up there mot of the day |

I'm having a few probs with my guard.
I have a 150w light (infrared) with a large guard designed for ceramics. Trouble is the guard gets too hot. I've taken it to the shop and explained and they reckon it is because its the lowest wattage advised for the size of viv (4x2x2) and it is getting too hot to get the viv right and will then cool down. I've been waiting ages though and it is still too hot for me to touch (the guard). Mitch always wraps himself around stuff so I'm a little worried.
has anyone else had this problem? I have been advised to cut a hole in the top and use a light above chicken wire so he definitely won't be able to reach the light. But I'd like to see if i can get this working first. Cheers |

I use 60W or 75W bulbs in my 3' vivs, maybe you could try a smaller wattage bulb?
I can't be certain as I don't use 4' vivs, but 60W's cope well in 3' vivs, so maybe you don't need 150W for that extra foot? |
