A little reminder for new owners.
I had to put my central heating on for the first time last night and this got me wondering if the heat mat in karolina`s viv would be up to the job over the coming months, especially as im normally out of the house for 12 hours at a time . The conclusion was no, so today i have ordered a pulse proportional stat and a reptile radiator to keep my little girl nice and warm.

yea winter gonna be a challenge for me too. me and Boo live in an attic room at the very top of the house, so when it is cold downstairs, it is very cold upstiars. I have a few halogen heaters to keep the room at a stable temperature, but i need 4 of them on at the same time to achieve this and my mum loves complaining about how much electricity i use up. hopefully the heat bulb and the dimming thermostat will be able to cope, if not then my mum gonna have to quit whinging about the electric bill, lol |

Happily all my reptiles are in my bedroom, which faces south. So what little sun there is in the winter hits my room for most of the day. Plus I also have 5 vivs worth of heat (2 of which have UV tubes as well) and the hot water pipes running underneath my floor. So it stays fairly warm in my room, even at night. The ambient temperature tends not to go below about 18C at night, which feels freezing to me because I get used to an ambient of about 26C at the height of summer! Cosy. |

yeah have noticed the change but only really with the heat mat. for dahomey. so i have added a low voltage red to help maintain temps. luckily he is in a rub in a viv so can contain heat better |

the low voltage red is a good idea spor
i've noticed Marilyn's rep rad is on full power constantly now (from looking at the PP stat) to maintain temps in our cold house! |

Lee...
Behave...
my house is cold to, but in the winter i keep the heating on constant at 18 during the day and it drops overnight to 12...
so hoping it will be ok for the corns, and my young royals...
Am going to be putting Kaz in a viv once she is settled on fresh kill...so she will be ok and that will just leave Kayla...but she is on top of Oscars viv so gets warmth from that..so should be ok.. |

The problems come when we dont know how cold our houses or rooms get when we arent in them. |

good point hodgie, that's when a good max/min thermometer is beneficial as it will record the lowest low temp and the highest high temp |

spor...what is the wattage for your red bulb. I have a 40w, would that be too high, to have running and do you have it just on in the day or at night as well.
At the moment, cos my room is always cold, i am using 2 thermostats and 2 heat mats. the hot side is on a 20w matt and pulse-proportionate and the cool is 8w and on an on/off |

Hi Heffa yeah mine is a 40watt. I have it running on a timmer. the last few days when i have not had to start work till later in the day i have had it on and got estimates of how quickly it heats up. so on the timer i have it on for a few hours and then of for and hr and so on. it just keeps the air temp falling to low and then in turn just making a bit less work for the heat mat as it takes a bit longer too cool down. the red bulb is over the top of the cool end of the viv. and the timer keeps it between 26-28C. the heat mat is on a mat stat turn almost to full at the minute as it is for dahomey and I am trying to keep him at top end temp so it is normally 33-34C. I have also put some shredded newspaper into his hides so it a bit more snug.. |

ahh sounds so nice and cosy.
Seem as I am running both the hot end and cool end off separate thermostats and mats, would you recommend that i do what you are, and put the bulb on for a few hours and off, to help with the heat mat also, or just run off the heat mats?
Seem as the heat mats are both on thermostats and controlled, i guess adding a bulb is just using more electricity. :)
Only want the best for my little Heffa, who aint so little anymore lol |

hello i am a noobie snake owner as you may no. i have a 40 watt red bulb heating my viv its a 4 ft by 16 inches deep but i have halved the length to 2 ft for her size. my temp seems to be ok. but when it gets a bit colder i think ill put a heat mat in but i got told heat mats will burn the snakes, so i suppose they have spacific heat mats that dont get too hot, and are you meant to turn the viv heating of of a night? because my bulb is on over nite on a thermostat? and another question while im here. do you have to bath snakes, or wash them?
thnx chris. |
