Why would you have to give a live multi? |

cos i have two males that are maturing and they are fighting and i dont have a spare cage, and i dont want to kill it the way i would have to till the hali gives me back my bank account i cant get a gas refill thingy..
would rather a snake did it than me and Sabine is the only one who has not been fed, the others have all been fed, so was going to give it one to her, but not if it would cause me problems in the long run.. |

i dont mind live feeding if it is needed, but i dont like killing anything, it pains me to do it..lol..
i was thinking it might make them fussy...
i would have just given it to Bliss to deal with had she not stopped feeding.. oh well i will decide who today and take the consequences if anything goes wrong next feed.. |

A cheap way to get CO2 is to buy compressed air cleaners ;)
Personally, I would just put the multi in the freezer, cruel, but at least you won't hear it |

So because you dont see it suffer, its ok?
Surely the best thing to do is skip the feed, you dont have to kill the mouse, and you dont have to give live to a defrost eater. |

As far as I am aware that would also be Illegal in this country as it falls under "causing unnecessary suffering to an animal" C02 chamber or a swift knock to the head is the prefered method, very little pain, over fast and provided the C02 is done correctly they have no idea what is happening. Usually in large scale businesses where they breed prey items and then gas them, they use too much/too fast, which is why half the time the frozen ones we buy are in contorted positions. it sounds silly, but if i buy frozen ones in, i always check them and make sure they are in a "peacefull" position. I'm kinda with Matty on this one, if you don't want to kill it, and feeding live is not the best option here either, then i would skip the feed. |

It is absolutely 100% illegal. There are no circumstances at all where any animal should be put in a domestic freezer in order too kill it. The comment should probably be removed from the thread as well.
Skip the feed until the animal can be humanely dispatched. |

that is very true Cat, they would suffer far longer in a freezer than than a knock on the head or with a snake..
this will sound cruel now especially how i feel about killing animals, but i did not have a problem with one of my royals taking the multi.. i dont like it, but it is something that can come with keeping snakes, and now i accept it..
But Bliss fed today, she had a small weaner and two multis one of which was the live one...
So she is back on track...
and i chose Bliss because when in feeding mode she will eat anything you give her..
she never fed last week but was well up for it today.. |

we totally agree that a freezer is not the right thing, but many people do actually do this...and not just with rodents, i recently heard of a breeder in the US that does it with baby royals cos he has to many or he feeds them to other snakes...
for me giving a rodent to a snake is probably the second best way after C02..
Also you have to understand Karls humour...
just read who wrote that bit...and i know he never meant it.. |

Hi,
The issue is not about understanding Karls humour or about when to live feed or not.
The problem is, is that it is on a public forum where anyone is free to view the posts that are made, and as such the comment suggesting something illegal is now in the public domain. It does not matter if Karl would actually do it or not, the fact is that it is illegal and the last place that anyone should be joking about cruelty to animlas is on a forum dedicated too caring for animals.
I have no doubt that everyone here loves all their pets dearly, but we have to show an equal amount of respect to the prey animlas we feed them.
Remember also that a forum will attract any number of newcomers to the hobby that it promotes, and with that comes the responsibilty of ensuring what is posted is relevant and legal.
There is a sticky on this forum that deals with the entire issue of feeding and how to go about it in a sensitive manner especially when we are faced with the prospect of having no option other than live feeding.
Sorry for banging on and it is just my opinion but I think its a serious issue and the entire post should probably be removed. |

Great reply Steve
You are right about the newcomers. We are supposed to be setting a good example. Thanks for pointing it out. |
