hi everyone
i recently got my first ball python and am not sure if the behaviour she is showing at the moment is normal. i read that she is ment to be regulating her body temp by going to her warm spot and then to the cooler end which i think i have right, but she seems to be staying in her hide that is at the warm end all the time and not coming out at all. she is shedding at the moment so may this be the reason for her inactivity? also i have not seen her drink all the time i have had her which i am a little worried about. i hope it is all down to the shedding process but would there be any other reason why she is so inactive? thanks in advance for any advise

She wont leave her hide until she has shed, so that explains the inactivity. They are also nocternal so dont expect her to move around until the evening.

Dont worry about her drinking, as long as she has access to clean water she will be drinking it.

How long have you had her? She may just be settling in still. They definitely do become more shy and secretive during shedding... just make sure she has some wood or a rough stone in her viv to rub on to help her get the skin off. You could always give the viv a quick spritz with water from a spray bottle to raise the humidity for shedding. If you're really worried about her hydration then you could put her in a very shallow bath of warm (no warmer than 32C, which is the warm end temperature of her viv) water for 15 mins or so. This will have the added benefit of plumping up her skin and helping it to shed.
Royals are pretty lazy overall it seems... quite shy and placid and are happy curled up in a cosy hide.

well i gave her a soak in the bath and she absolutly hated it! i made sure the water was the right temp and not too deep but she did not like it one bit so i got her out after about five mins and put her back in her viv.

id be intrested to know if anyone elses python dislikes a soak in water or does your python love it?

Yeah mine didn't really like it either to be honest. I kept my hand in there so he could have something to go to, but he very much just wanted to slither up my arm and out! It was necessary though at the time because he had a really bad shed and had only managed to get the skin off of his head... the rest of his body was still stuck. Took me 2.5hrs to get it all off!
