| Went to get Beau out tonight and he went to strike, I have a feeling he is hungry, as only had him a week,and not fed him yet, plan is to do this tomorrow. My question is, is it better to feed them in the viv or put them in a separate tank for feeding? as i didn't think you were meant to handle them after feeding, so i am concerned about putting him back in the viv once he has eaten. |

Hi, sounds like he might be hungry. I prefer to feed mine in his RUB but you need to be careful he doesn't ingest any substrate, what are you using as substrate?
I know its new and you want to handle him but try not too until he is feeding, might save you from the horrible stress of a fussy feeder.

| Hi i can't remeber what it's called but its like wood shavings, quite happy to put him in a RUB but not sure if i will get him out without him striking at me, and i don't fancy getting bitten!!I am not worried about handling him as i don't want to stress him to much and would rather wait before i do, what i don't want is a snake that won't let me handle it. It's all so new to me. |

at least until he's an established feeder i'd personally feed him IN the viv/faun. it sounds like you've got aspen for substrate so the risk from ingestion is minimal.
if you feed OUT of the viv though it's fine to gently lift them out of the feeding tub, fully supporting their weight and place them straight bak into their viv. i'd recommend leaving them a good 10 mins after they've finished feeding to allow them to come down from 'feeding mode' before attempting this. |

| I'm new to all this and snakes, my friend has a royal which she handles daily, (apart from when fed) and she is a lovely snake thats why i got one, Did i make a bad choice for a snake i want to handle??? i read up on them and they said they are good first time snakes, as well as the corns, which we brought our daughter (hatchling) the guy in the shop said as a first snake it would be fine as well!!!!! |

In my opinion they are great first snakes as long as you are aware of their requirements etc. The vast majority are brilliant for handling as long as you introduce handling slowly at first and only when they are feeding regularly. |

| Yep have read lots on them, and believe i have the viv set up ok, temp around the 85-90 mark. but think i will be changing the substrate for paper once they have fed, and been left for the 48hrs |

a lot of keepers whos royals are fantastic feeders very rarely actually handle them, and the first thing you'd knock off if your royal went off feeding is the handling.....
as a basic generalisation though some royals will tolerate handling but a lot won't either, basically you get lucky or you don't...

| Well I have 3 royals and they all handle well even when about to shed though i usually leave them in peace then and they all feed well too I guess it's a lottery but then if everything else is ok in their world and they are not stressed by noise and through traffic then that certainly helps |

i have 4 that are all great for handling.
i would suggest not handling until he has at least 3 consecutive feeds though. I know it seems like along time but can really pay of. |
