This is my first snake :) Born august09, i got her friday (2days ago)
I fed her last night and she fed on the 2nd attempt perfectly (first attempt she striked for the food but soon released her grip)
It is far from tame at the moment, but i have read its best not to handle the snake much at all for the first few weeks atleast. I have only handled to move into the box for feeding.
Dont know its sex yet, it hasnt been probed, therefore i havent decided on a name either!
Any tips would be appreciated for first time snake keepers!

Hey thanks guys.
and haha, yeah thats the feeding box^^ It's currently in a 24" x 15" x 15" viv, seems to be doing good.
Am i correct in moving my snake to a different area for feeding? i have read that its better not to feed in the viv. Just that the snake has striked a few times, when moving him into the viv, he striked at the glass when i walked past. I think he is stressed from settling in and moving him for feeding. I'll let him settle down now and will refrin from handling till the next feed!
Thanks for the help and the warm welcome! |

I don't move mine, some people do.
Depends what substrate you are using. For instance, I wouldn't feed on Orchid bark, but there are ways around it, like putting paper down, so that no substrate is ingested. |

I would give at least a week or two just to settle down. |

I do have one more concern.
I am using a 40W bulb in my viv, and it seems to generate so much heat the heatmat is rarely needed, apart from at night. ( i have a stat which shows when the heatmat is on) I have temperature readers at both ends of my viv showing simlar readings during the day... This means i dont have much of a temp gradient because the light heats the whole viv to the same temperature. Do i need a different bulb? my viv is only 2foot x 15" x 15" |

You wont get a temp gradient in a viv that small with a bulb, I would turn it off and just use the mat. |

but then it is very dark, is there any bulbs that create light without too much heat?

Also, if that's the thermometer you're using (the strip on the back), get a digital one, so much more accurate and very cheap.
Just search for 'Digital Aquarium Thermometer' on ebay, they're ~£3. |

aw cute.. might be an idea to leave for a week now before feeding again just so that s/he can get totally used to the new surroundings, no handling no feeding zip, just water changes and substrate spot checking |

i dont think any bulb can really give you light without heat...but someone might have a way to achieve this |

Something like an 8W energy saving bulb gives out negligible heat. |

i think infra red bulbs give heat and the minimal light so you get both then. But you then wouldnt need the heat mat for a heating source |
