hello, sorry to talk so late, but i pick up my first snake tomorrow, and my husband and I are setting up the heating now for her!!!
But i have just read in my Royal Python book that the heat mat should be placed under the viv!!! BUT our viv is home made and has a wood bottom!!!! can we place the heat mat in the viv? and if so do we need to put anything on it to stop her from getting burnt?

Hi. Heat mat will be fine inside the viv as long as you have a thermostat to control temps. Do you have one?

By the way congrats on getting your first snake. Where are getting it from? is it a baby? If its a viv you could heat it with a ceramic lamp or IR light.

thanks, yes she is 8months old and I am getting her from a reptile shop near where I live. they have said they wont let them go any younger then 8months as they like them to have a good few feeds first, and sheds and they like to handle them as much as pos.
yes we have got a thermo,im so excited we are going to pick her up tomo morning at 1000, my husband loves snakes and i've always promised he can have one, but he is due to go aways to sea in a few weeks, so we are getting ME a baby one so i can get use to holding it and my confi can grow as she does!!!!!

Excellent

I would put the heatmat in the viv (covering about a third) with the substrate on top and then lay the stat probe on top and use a digital thermometer to check it is at correct temp. If you are using a stat then she won't be at risk of getting burnt.

I would advise making sure you're completely set up and your temps are correct etc. before purchasing. I'm sure the shop would understand if you needed to postpone for a few days.

A lot of people who use heatmats in vivs (only suitable whilst snake is small) put some lino over the heatmat to avoid direct contact. You can then use a suitable silicon sealant to seal the lino down over it to make it waterproof.

Personally in a viv I'd go with a heat lamp.

Hi, So many snake keepers use heat mats i personally hate the damn things for snakes as royals can p*** quite a lot not good as electric and p*** dont mix well!. Got heat mats on outside of my giant african millipedes, emporer scorpion and hissing cockroaches tanks not on my rep collection thou!! same old story personel preference what works for you. I have got a 100w bulb on a dimmer stat.
