Hi all,

Just thought I would share the eggcellent surprise I had on tuesday night.

After spotting a bit of a funny poop in Hopes RUB by her hide, I thought I would just check to see if there was any more in her hide for me to clear up and this is what I faced on lifting off her hide...

After running around sorting getting everything ready we went back to get the eggs off her...

Here they are all ready to go...

And here they are in the incubator...

Now we just have to wait...50 days to go...

Yes, the eggs are large, 100g a piece is fairly normal, hence the need for the female to be large enough. Most people say at least 1500g in this country, American breeders seem to try to push it a little earlier.

Its a Normal x Fire breeding, so each egg has a 50% chance of being a Fire.

Aww, that's a shame - she looked so proud of herself!

Sorry if these are totally dumb questions, but in all my reading and googling I don't seem to have found much out about:

What is the average size of a clutch? I was amazed to see the size of these - I thought that snakes would lay loads of smaller eggs.

If royals only lay four or so in a clutch I might, just might, breed Shahi and Saada in a year or two, because if I can't find good homes for the babes, I could (if I got rid of some furniture lol) keep them.

Talking of furniture, I had been toying with the idea of building a viv stack in the bedroom alcove, but would it be practicable to keep a male and a female in the same stack if you didn't breed with them? In the breeding season, wouldn't it be frustrating for them if they were aware of the opposite sex in close proximity? Is it like mammals exuding pheromones? Or are snakes only aware of the opposite sex when put together for breeding?

Again, sorry if these are totally basic questions that I should have found answers for myself.

Sorry I didn't know.

BATS the average amount of eggs laid is usually between 4-6.

Most people with a growing collection tend to build a rack system whether it be with viva (more space) or rub's. With rubs though you have to remember that the ambient temp still needs to be kept up so the whole room needs to be heated.

I wouldn't personally recommend co-habitating royals together especially opposite sexes. Have a read of this sticky.

Thanks, Bob. I might just have a think about breeding my two in future then. The stack would be vivs - I keep rubs (and spare mats and stats) for emergencies but I like vivs best.

No, I wouldn't dream of cohabiting, with royals' erratic eating cycles it could be disastrous. Sorry if I was unclear; what I meant to ask was, is it okay to keep males and females (in different vivs) in close proximity ie a stack? If I don't breed, will the lad downstairs get frustrated knowing there's a girl upstairs, and vice versa?

(But I take it you WOULD have to introduce them and let them have a bit of time together in the same viv to give them chance to get up to a bit of how's your father lol )

Ahhh sorry Lilith i misunderstood. No its fine to keep mr and mrs upstairs and downstairs. I keep mine in a RUB rack and i've never had any problems so a viv would definitely be ok.
