God this settling in period is a killer. I have another 2 weeks at least before even thinking about handling Duke, and will attempt a feed next Sunday. I am waiting until he has (hopefully) taken 2 feeds before I start handling him regularly.
Though I did get a sneaky hold yesterday, his hide was buried too deep into the substrate and he was wearing it like a tortoise, I'm sure he didn't feel safe or secure so had to intervene. It was a joy to watch him exploring, and wrapping himself round the light guard, doing a few chin-ups. I smooth out his substrate and he leaves tell tale carnage overnight too, dragging over the foliage and pushing the substrate around, over turning his branch, not sure if its a snake or a mini bulldozer.
He's just coming out now strangely enough so that will be all, away to watch him.

Yep I'm hooked, he is sitting with his head out of the hide, not going anywhere fast I think but he just yawned and showed me his weaponry. No wonder it is sore when a Royal gets a hold of you, those are some seriously sharp and large teeth, very impressive.

I am very much looking forward to that. I've seen videos of them and they appear to strike and coil so fast that if you blink you will miss it. I'm nervous about the best way to go about feeding but I'm just going to start the same way I feed my corn snake (apart from been more cautious of a strike, my corn is so lazy) and see how it goes. He is a big fatty so I won't worry if he doesn't eat straight away and I do know he does feed if left overnight (what the reptile shop did) so there is always that technique to fall back on should he decide that eating straight away is far too much effort.

And kitchen tongs from Wilkinsons' cost only a couple of quid. I like the ones with the soft plastic grips so that if snakey misses and bangs the snakey schnoz, it's hopefully not too painful ...

I have some very long feeding tweezers and was thinking of wrapping something soft around the end to avoid injury though with the length of the tails on those rats I think its unlikely.

I grab mine between the shoulders, don't suppose it matters much though.

Will be picking a pair of these up as one of mine once grabbed the tongs with the rat and had to wait for her to release before I could grab the tongs back. Cheers bats
