Hi all, we seem to be getting mixed information concerning the required humidity for our vivarium. The care sheet on this site says to keep the humidity level at 50-60% unless shedding(65%) but without constant spraying ours hovers between 42 and 45%. When we asked a guy in our local reptile shop he said not to worry, they like it dry so 45% is quite ok. Then today we went to see the guy we bought her off and explained it to him, mentioning that we're using aspen substrate and he told us NOT to use aspen and switch to cypress mulch instead.
Anyway, now we're confused.
Questions ...
Is a humidity level of 45% a BIG problem?
Would using cypress mulch make a big difference?
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

| My reptile shop set up my viv soaking, humidity was through the roof (96%) Took me a few days to dry it out a bit. 45% is the level I keep my corn snake at, and I know ROyals need more humidity than corns, I am aiming for 60%, and use dark bark stuff, not sure of its name but its not mulch, mulch will most likely give you problems with the ground been wet, scale rot etc. |

I keep all mine on paper.
If the humidity is to low you snake may not shed properly, Its fine to raise it (they come from a tropical country and when it rains it chucks it down) you can either move the water bowl to the warm end or do what i do in the winter months when i have the central heating on and thats to put a wet flanel in there. |

| great idea with the flanel Hodgie. I keep my rub's at 60% then raise to 75% after eyes clear from the blue shed phase. As already mentioned in a viv its best to spray the decor or sides as you dont want a wet floor. |

| I honestly don't believe most hydrometers nowadays, throw yours away, if your snake is shedding well and healthy the humidity is fine. |

| Corect me if im wrong, but isnt cypress bad for snakes? its a soft wood and most soft woods are a problem for snakes. |

I'm so glad you said that, I had mine at like 70-80 for a week, then about 40-50 and after a month or trying a thousand different things i just lost my temper and threw it at a wall, been a lot happier since. |

Would kind of agree. I had 3 or 4 digital hygo's. Same make and model and even if placed in the same rub would give different readings. I now use just one and check each rub periodically. My rubs are set up the same so I know if I buy a new 33l I'll put the same amount of holes and water bowl size. This helps keep thing very constantespecially without the use of certain bulbs drying out the air. |

I've always know Humidity to be approximately 45-55 Which is not too much higher than room temp. This can normally be achieved in the viv by placing a bowl of water in the hot side, just off-centre of the heat lamp. You'll need to replace the water daily but it keeps the humidity nice. During shredding I just sprayed his bark hide and plants under the light, with a normal garden spray bottle, in order to raise the humidity and make his shedding more comfortable.
We have a chameleon had have to spray him 2 times a day to achieve a 65-75 humidity rate, so the bowl of water I find is fine. |

i belive that humidity is not a problem with royals.
i have never measured any of my snakes tanks for humididty because they have all shed fine, none have ever had a problem. i belive keeping the humidity up for a long period of time will eventually cause problems |

But the humidity levels in Africa are much higher than 50%.
Crystal Palace reptiles keep all theirs at 90% because of all their fish tanks which are on site. |

Think its wrong to say humidity is not a problem with royals as it clearly is. How many threads are there on stuck sheds etc.
Some people will be lucky with the relative humidity in their house or set up but others won't.
So to never once check or have an idea i find bizarre. Yes hygrometers can vary a lot but i still feel some type of measurement is better than none. |

| Fair enough, a difference of opinions is good. Im not looking for an argument. I'd be very interested though to see what advice you'd offer to someone who's royal consistently suffered from bad shed's. Bearing in mind that humidity is not a problem for them. |
