A week Thursday I got Duke, I have seen practically nothing of him since, not overly worried about it, just the frustrating settling in. So yesterday I noticed he was poking his head out of the hide and watching what is going on at about 6pm. His light goes off at 7 and I cover the viv with a towel so my room light doesn't annoy him, I will slowly remove the cover over a few months (I did the same with thte corn snake and it worked a treat) but one step at a time.
I majorly messed up on Thursday and tried to feed him, as I was tweezing in the rat he came to investigate and it bumped his nose, it scared him and he went into a ball. I left him over night but he didn't eat. I was gutted that I bumped his nose and that I tried to feed when he must have not been settled yet.
Anyway where was I, he is poking his head out again today. I hope that this is the beginning of him settling in. I'm not going to attempt another feed until next Sunday, give him another whole week to get more settled. It amazes me that some people reccommend Royals as starter snakes. No way is this Royal as easy to settle as my corn snake, but I don't mind the extra work or worry, he is worth it.
Though I've seen him yawn, why he is scared of me with those teeth I'll never know PMSL. |

lol, sometimes it just means that they want to explore, it sounds like he may just be starting to settle in a bit, but it could be him just being nosey and checking for any danger shame about the feed, but it happens sometimes, youll learn what your royal likes and doesn't like. my bullet doesn't like it being to close to his face, other wise he will not eat it, whereas bow like to be practically touching it and then grab it |

Well checking for danger is a good thing because there is none. Before he wasn't even checking just balled up under his hide for a week, I don't even think he has been drinking but he's maybe been sneaking out at night for a sip. Withthe feeding whoopsy I was just putting the rat in and he came over so I stopped still with rat in mid air and it just swung at his face. I'll know next time, just get it down to ground ASAP and hopefully he'll nab it. |

Oh, just bad luck, but im sure he'll come round! Flo had issues when one of the dogs rushed up to the viv with a squeeky toy just as she struck at her rat....took an age to recover from that. they always come good in the end! |

Oh dear, lol, my dog is on strict orders to stay away from the snake corner for a little while, the corn and the dog are fine together but just while the royal settles in he's banned. Its amazing how shy they are considering their heftyness, my corn snake has balls of steel, and is a tiny thing, nothing scares him and nothing has from day 1 but I haven't seen Duke out of his hide in nearly 2 weeks. Just hoping this is his week to start to shine but if not i will just have to wait, he's only young and I'm sure the moving around from breeder to shop, shop to my house has taken it out of him. |
