I've never been a fan of those fiddly metal locks for viv doors. I did try to fit them but gave up in disgust. I've always been worried that a snake might nose at the edge of a glass door and work it open, or that one of my cats, who seem to have had a rapport with the snakes from day one, might bat on the glass and inadvertently slide a door open. So I've relied on strong tape and vigilance.

However, I've now discovered a handy little gadget - a rubber wedge like a miniature doorstop. You wedge it in the glass overlap in the middle, and it really does work. It isn't childproof, but otherwise it's very very good.

I found these at Blue Lizard, my favourite online shop, marketed as rubber cage door wedges, 6 for £3.24. I can recommend them.

Might try them myself, I have the fiddley locks at the moment and that screw at the back which is meant to hold the thing to the back pane of glass falls off everytime I undo the glass.

I know, I know, I know, but, as I've said before, after reading words of wisdom from the Maestro Bob about ambient temps, I now realise that though I can get away with a temporary rub on top of a warm viv, I can't set up permanent rubs in this house as I don't have a room I can shut off and heat to a consistent temperature. So there.

There are loads of things about the design of the average viv that I hate, but I was pleased to find these little gismos. Didn't know about window wedges, GMac. Still at 50p each the viv wedges aren't bad, and I got free delivery because I got a load of bulb guards at only £8 each ... for my viv stack.

ps Bob, twice I've tried to send you a 'thankyou' message, and twice my email's told me it hasn't delivered it ... d'oh. So thanks.

Ha, folded cardboard was the first thing I thought of with the first viv, but the doors still moved a bit. The rubber wedges are sort of ...well...gummier...

I use viv-locks and have never had any problems with them. If you put a bit of muscle into tightening it to the glass it won't budge an inch. I have mine on the top part of the glass and they stay put. I like the idea of locks rather than wedges, I don't want an escapee and its just habit now, shut door, lock door, put key in draw.

Urrgh, I bought a load of those things and could I fit them? It was ludicrous! After wrecking one, trying to straighten it and tighten the tiny little screw at the back (whereupon the whole thing just slithered out of place when I let go of it, no matter how tightly I fixed it) I took the rest back to the shop and swapped them for some mice lollies for the snakes.

I admire your persistence, I really do, but I couldn't fix the damn things, honest ...
