I've just splashed out on a copy of Kevin McCurley's 'Complete Ball Python' - and what a superb book it is, despite the price.

Before it arrived I thought the high price was due to its being a specialist/niche market publication; handling it I'm amazed to find it's definitely a luxury item as far as printing and binding goes. Glossy paper throughout, weighs a ton ... well, it certainly won't fall apart in a million years, but it might reach a wider audience if less expensively produced and priced. But that's a minor niggle. It's a quality book in every sense. (Although in the UK we would not usually keep our hatchlings in transparent tanks - another niggle but never mind eh? - shurrup, Lil!)

Right, where was I?

It's this sentence in the chapter about the original habitat of royals, that sums up royal python keeping for me:

'In some cultures the occurrence of a ball python wandering into a person's home is regarded as a blessing.'

I couldn't put it better myself.

Amazon (last time I looked) had 2 secondhand copies, from £56. (I bought mine, the cheapest of 3, for almost £48+ p&p) I assumed the secondhand price went up with the condition of the book, but mine is mint, good as new.

NERD in the states are offering it at $65 inc shipping and I understand it's cheaper to get it from the states than buy in the UK.

I'm certain I've read of it costing up to £100 new in the UK but Blackskull mentioned in a recent post that he'd picked up a new copy for £32.

I've tried pricing it through the conventional bookseller outlets - WH Smith and the like, but no joy.

I've never got my head round Ebay though, and you may probably find some bargains on there.

Cheers mate!

And is that the hardback or a paperback?(though I'd have been happy with a paperback.)

Mine's the hardback, and I've always found Amazon secondhand very reasonable. Shopped around a bit too and couldn't find the damn thing anywhere else in the UK... oh well.

It's bloody good, I will say. Some of the housing advice doesn't always tie in with what we like to practise on the forum, but from what I've read, it really is a good reference manual.

Ah, makes me feel better then!

(Wow, you mean you just walked into a shop and bought it? Nothing like that round here in the frozen north ...)

Yes, Kelfezond, it is, it is!

(I mean, like, would we be without them?)

found it just by chance i was looking at the snakes and the gf was looking what books they had. she showed me it and asked if it was the one i was looking for, so i held on tight lol

think i payed 45 for it

the shops that i go too are not that great for things like that just the reps and basic stuff, which they are over priced for both. one garden centre had a pastel for 280. the bloke saw me looking at it came over to me and said its a good price lol
