Are common boas easy to keep?

Theres an 8ft one someones got for sale n both me and my wife would love to have her but, common sense (dont you just hate it sometimes lol) tells me it would be better getting a hatchling since we've no experience with bigger snakes. Im losing the battle with the wife lol which is the weird bit concidering she wasnt too keen on snakes until i got orlina. To try put her off i said it'll be guinea pigs that we feed her possibly rabbits and she said as long as its me that feeds her its fine

Im 6 ft 5 built like a brick sh*t house so i could handle her size and weight but told the wife she wont be able to sit with her round her neck like Orlina and she said its fine because she can still sit with her when im there with her. The boa is "rediculously tame" and is handled often never biten or struck at anyone

Is there a great reason i shouldnt get her? We'd love her but i thought i would get an opinions from other large snake keepers. Obiously i would know everything i could know before she came. I know she could possibly reach 10 ft. We have the room (she comes with 6.5ft viv) and a lock would be kept on the room door as well so no other pets could get in and would only be handled in that room with closed doors so no other pets can come in.

Except for size, type of food and space requirements is there any difference in the upkeep between common boas and royals

You're only allowed it if we get pics of you struggling to keep her in place when you first hold her hehehe

If it were me i'd say go for it! Hopefully somebody educated in large snakes will appear soon with words of wisdom though.

Also, I see no reason your wife wouldn't be able to hold the snake? Or is that me being nieve?

there is a great reason you should get one, boas are great.

the upkeep is very similar to royals yes, and feeding boas that size rabbits is not unusual, better than a few rats.

The only thing i would suggest is make sue you are ready for a larger snake as it has the potential to grow a bit more as you have said. If you have the smallest doubt about that then get a young one and let it grow with you by the time it gets to a decent size you will know everything about the snake.

There's nothing quite as wonderful as a Boa! They are fab and have such a lovely nature! Mine is only small....5ft (measured yesturday) and i like the idea of starting small and growing with him. In your case i think you might get a shock over the size and weight compared to smaller royals but you'll soon get used to it. They are much more relaxed and generaly slower moving so nice to be with.

She looks lovely, hope you get her, i cant think of a reason why not!

Thats what the wife ultimately wants, albino burmese...i promised her an albino royal but its the burmese all the way. Dont think I could handle something that can get that big (guarenteed i'd get a record breaker lol) plus a 9x3x3 viv.....mental lol

Yeah she's like me I settled for Royals when a burm was what I wanted ^^

could probably manage a 8x3x3 for a male burm, a small male could be fine with a 7x3x3 too :D

girlfriends promised me one when we move out xD

Decided to leave it an get a young one and learn as it grows have to say im gutted. The fact its a 500 mile round trip to get her had its part to play as well. Whoever gets her is going to have 1 beautiful snake

To jump into a 8 foot boa after having only experience with a 4 foot royal is a big jump but having one from small will let us learn as it goes and i'd learn its mood better when it does get bigger.

Still trying to convince myself its the best way to do it lol

LOL - free member ... so was I until I paid that extra 5 quid ...

Don't talk to me about preloved ... new snake coming on Monday, it looks like ...

Shame about the boa, Nok, but it's a hell of a way from Berwick (is it Berwick?) to Wolverhampton, especially at this time of year, and for a snake to travel back, and apparently little boas soon become big boas!

Living room? What's a living room?

(at present huddled in small island allowed by huge downstairs viv stack, 4' fishtank, a lot of books and six new flatpack vivs ...)

Actually don't regret having not had children now, as the little toerags would undoubtedly be invading my space with THEIR overflow viv stacks ...

Haha yeah I don't think i'll have kids i'm too busy looking after my snakes.

Also, I hope nobody thinks me rude if I were to contact this seller, i'd like to make sure nok is sure he's not interested before I do anything.

Also, also, I have a serious problem, I need to seek help for this snake addiction.
