I intended to get a single adult, hopefully a preloved pet that was in need of a good home.
As many here did also, I saw the new program last Wednesday on Ch5, called Essex Jungle about a pet rescue place in essex (right near Southend). I called them up and asked if they had any adult balls in need of a new home, and yes, they did. Went there today to have a look with a friend of mine and her children. Ian was very friendly (the chap on TV) and took us through his many different pet areas via the emu and new crocodile pen to the Snake section. Both were so friendly (the snakes) and he explained that they were cohabiting for the last 5 years but the previous owner felt she could no longer manage them. I fell in love with them, and decided that although I really only wanted one, I decided to take both as it seemed a shame that they should now be broke apart. The male is a normal Ball, the female is a tiger ball. He has a few burn scars, I believe they had at some stage been kept in a viv with an unguarded heater :( Pictures to follow when I get time, but for now its tiome to go and buy a new viv plus electrics and the normal husbandry items. Whilst he does not "sell" any of the rescue pets, he does ask for a donation to his fund, the value is decided by the buyer. |

Aww good for you taking in a rescue and from that geezer from that show, I'd have ran a clean mile away from that Emu, not a fan of the big birds lol. You planning on still keeping them together as a breeding pair? |

I will keep them as a pair, but not worried if they breed or not, I want them as pets, anything else is extra I guess :) |

Nice one. He can't set the donation as you have to have a pet shop license if you set the price ;-)
Good to see rescues going to good homes |

Congrats - I have an open mind about cohabbing snakes, though I personally wouldn't care to with royals because of the fasting period. But those two sound like they see each other as part of the furniture ... old married couple eh?
I'd recommend keeping a spare enclosure, rub or whatever just in case you did have to separate them, and if the lass ends up expecting eggs, she'll be better off kept on her own. As long as she's over 1500g there's no reason why she shouldn't breed. Have you googled the Markus Jayne 'breeding ball pythons' website? That gives a very good and well illustrated account of what to expect.
Again congrats on rescuing these two. |

Well done for housing 2 unwanteds. It's always good to hear of any unloved pet being re-housed.

Hi, I don't have a TV but found that episode on youtube today - your snakes weren't on but perhaps next week?
Interesting series - well, the humans were a bit boring but the reps were ok. Found the episode with the bull snake fascinating! He was fishing about with the snake hook and I was thinking: Just get in there and grab it! (Shurrup Lil, you're no expert!) And then he did get in there and grab it, and it calmed instantly ...Felt dead chuffed.
The other thing was, it had the 'teardrop' markings below its eyes that I've learned are typical of the gopher snake - but bull and gopher snakes seem to be very closely allied ... (as I have a new and naughty gopher, you'll understand my interest.)
Will watch youtube next week in hopes of seeing your two. |

Hi Bats, actually they have been in both episodes. But just brief shots, in ep01 he starts off saying heres a beardy, heres another, heres some pythons (they are mine) They are shown a further time and once again in ep2, but they have not been shown being rescued yet. She ate a rat today but he refused, I suspect just down to the fact he is getting ready to shed |

Hi, watched the first episode last night - saw your guys!
That Mark Newby is quite a guy - good on him!
I rewatched the 2nd episode - and compared that bull with my Ziska - very very similar! But of course the gophers and bulls are related. They are scary, but before I got Ziska (Tank Girl lol) I'd researched and found it said that much of it is bluff. Zisk has certainly calmed down; today she was out and about, wanting notice taken, and also it was feeding day; scarfed down her grub with only one tail rattle.
Yeah, if your lad has refused, it will be the shed - he'll shed and leave you a dungheap and snatch the rat off you next time. |
