OK so I bought Duke the next size up, I don't go into all this super scientific work it out malarchy I go by eye, so the adult rat was longer than a large weaner and slightly bigger in the backside region so decided it would be OK.
He took it, he was out of his hide quicker than I've ever seen before did his usual poking and prodding and then got the business of eating it and he ate it in public instead of dragging it away. I'm not going lie and say it was gone in seconds, he struggled (as usual) to get over/around the front limbs (I'm going to start snipping them off with scissors lol) and it was a bit more of a stretch than he's had to deal with before but my corn snake puts all other snakes to shame on the dismantle your face scale.
I think he'll be back to large weaners for at least the next month, part using up leftovers, part my nerves can't take it. |

Sounds to me as if he was saying - 'Oo, look what I found, Bob! Watch me deal with this!'
Being the scientific malarkey type I'd say that, while forgetting the exact weight of your Duke (Laaarge!!) he must be pretty capable of dealing with a 100g appprox small rat - sounds like it gave him a thrill even if it gave you heart failure.
I'll never forget the time when Spooky was growing up; during her first winter she was a very poor feeder but one day she accepted TWO pinkies, to my amazement. Due to my very poor management she then realised she had access to a jumper mouse warming for another corn ...oh no? Oh yes! I thought I'd have to call the fire brigade! (Miraculously no regurge.)
I know what you mean about rat feet. Shahi has trouble with the back feet and tail, and I was advised always to cut the rat's tail off for Saada. I don't like removing these valuable bits of roughage but when you've watched them struggle for ages, it may be best.
CongRATS Duke! (Bet he'll sleep that one off for a day or two!) |

haha naughty Spooky. I'm sure that was such a funny thing to discover. All mine struggle to get over the front legs, well Sanke has a bit of a habit of eating backwards. I actually dislocate the front legs for Spot because it really drags on his jaws, maybe I'll do it for them all now.
I think Duke will be sleeping that one off for a good while, i'm going to leave him an extra day. I now have 2 weeks/2 weaners to decide whether to switch him to the adults or give him another month on the weaners. I think a weighing session is in order just to get an idea of Duke's heft. |

I live about 2 miles from the H&W shipyards, I'm sure they'll have a crane capable of weighing Duke. |
