| Hi im looking for a large rub, i would like 1 with the same floor area as a 3ft viv, any1 got any ideas of where i could get 1, cheers |

Have a look at 70L or 145L Really Useful Boxes, they're pretty big, they've both got the same floor space, but the 145L is taller than the 70L.

| im having second thoughts about a rub setup now as some people say heat mats/belly heat is no good for royals, what you all think? |

Hi, a rub with heat mat won't put your royal at risk, as the heat mat will go under the rub, which means there will be an air gap between the underneath of rub and mat.
It's when a mat is in a viv that the danger to royals or any heavy bodied snakes arises. A mat can't be put under the viv; the viv material is too dense and there is no air gap. Therefore thermal blocking and overheating, even with a statted mat, is possible. When the mat is placed inside the viv, if the snake basks on it, the same problem can arise, and can result in severe burns to the snake, which will not sense dangerous heat in the same way that a mammal can.
So the safest heating in a viv, for a royal of any substantial size, is infra-red/ceramic heating, guarded and statted of course.
Personally I like vivs, as they hold the heat better; a rub, even when heated by a mat, has to be kept in a room heated to the proper ambient temp - so you're talking about a very warm room, all the year round. But many people swear by rubs - it is really down to personal preference. |

Personally I don't bother to lower temps at night. In most rooms the ambient temp will be lower, which may, especially in winter, affect the temp of a viv, although the thermostat will raise the temp in the warm end, giving the snake a choice of places in which to thermoregulate. The cool end may automatically cool a little; so I don't bother lowering temps deliberately, although some people like to.
If your bulb is the only heat source, you can't turn it off; there has to be a heat source 24/7. Infra-red light can't be seen by snakes; it won't stress them out like white light and can be safely left on all the time, statted and guarded of course. If the viv is in a bedroom where the human occupants don't care for constant light, a ceramic bulb can be used; this emits heat but no light; again it must be statted and guarded. Personally I prefer the IR - you can see it's working, and although I've got several vivs upstairs the lights don't prevent me from sleeping - in fact they come in very handy for the inevitable trip to the loo lol. |

| All my adults are on ceramics. Though I see no difference in feeding patterns or activity of a royal with belly heat or air heat. |
