I think most of the problem is a complete lack of understanding, I even mentioned to this woman that snakes are reptiles, reptiles are not like mammals they don't have the same emotions as animals and they don't see the world in the same way. A dog might see a stick and think enjoyment, a snake would see a secure warm place and get the same feeling ^^ The fact is that although we like to think snakes are prancing around in the jungle having a great time they're not in fact they're much more likely to crawl into the drainage system of somebodies house where it is nice and safe and dark :P

I meet lots of people through work and as I love talking anything snake I'll quite often tell them I have snakes and it is amazing how many myths and fears are around about snakes. The best one is I shouldn't have them in the same house as my dog because one day I'll wake up to a dog shaped bump in my snake, I have to explain very factually (I want to educate not preach or tell off) that my dog is about 100 times the size of the largest prey that my largest snake could eat and that even without that fact, my dog and my snakes are in different rooms when I'm not in and the snakes are locked in cages. Another one is won't it strangle you or is it poisonous, I REALLY hate that one, I say I don't intend on eating them, and they look at me daftly and I then have to explain that poison is ingested, and they are in fact referring to venom which is injected and the correct term is venomous and then have to explain the difference between venomous snakes and constrictors. The list really is endless.

I couldn't possibly argue with someone about something I knew nothing about but yet you find that people do, I've had a discussion with my Mum about the 18 litre RUB that my Boa lives in, I explained that she is a baby and as a baby they don't stretch out and wander all over the place, they hide and stress easily and that when she is bigger she won't feel quite so vulnerable and so will have a much larger vivarium, luckily my Mum was able to see that what I was saying and how I was keeping her was in the best interest of the snake and not a space saving thing, I'd love to have her in her huge vivarium.

Its always good to come on here though where everyone speaks the same language, and knows what they are on about.

Oh that's another thing I've heard. 'Snakes are so horrible how they eat the prey.' Well I'd say death by suffocation's probably less painful than say a Lion mauling a Zebra, and then proceeding to eat it while it's dying. A snake eating is also a lot cleaner looking and there tends to be less blood.

I think some people make the assumption they just slither on up to a live mouse and eat it alive.

Is it bad I wish I could eat like a snake? I'd love to slide an entire roast dinner down my gullet as a party trick...

Also: Has anyone heard the one about the woman getting sized up by her snake as a prey item? So many people have told me about that, and I always dismiss it as an urban myth. It'd have to be one HUGE snake to eat a fully grown woman, and then I don't think anyone would be stupid enough to share a bed with it. Hell I wouldn't share a bed with Dorian in case I squished him...

I think the one about a snake being able to eat a human or should I say a fully grown man is the most popular myth lol, although I could be wrong and it could be true. I did watch a program once where an anaconda had killed a man then tried to eat him only to regurge after he couldn't get past the mans shoulders, and trying to explain this to my brother in law was niegh on impossible lol, then I've had someone say I shouldn't have a bearded dragon as they have the aids virus under there nails, I then have to explain that they are thinking of the Komodo Dragon and although they carry some nasty bugs in there syliva it certainly isn't the aids virus... and lastly and the best in my opinion was when the mother of one of my sons friends, told me she kept a retic python back in the 70's and it wouldn't eat anything but porridge oh and it thrived

A Retic eating porridge...? That awkward moment when someone's blatantly bull****ting...
How would that even work? It'd make a huge mess.

my all time fave 'haters' is when of the women work I work with regularly. I don't mention my snakes very often as i'm fed up with the grief I get of certain colleagues but this particulat lady is one of the worst for it. She was banging on and on at me for the umpteenth time that i shouldn't have snakes, it's strange/cruel/dangerous (yadda yadda,*yawn*). I Got me own back in style when I showed her a picture of my 12ft burmese (nice and swollen, having eaten a large rabbit) and told her "that's what happened to the last person that upset me!" Silly i know, but oh so funny to see the look on her face!

Don't get me wrong as I'm all for educating people and will invite almost anyone who wants to see/handle my pets to come & do just that to help cure their phobia. I gotta admit tho, I think i've reached a point now after so many years of ignorance coming from the same people that (with them anyways) I think "what is the point???"

Oh superb - I'd have loved to see her face!

I will confess - the other day a (perfectly pleasant) neighbour was being a bit insistent about inviting themselves round - and I hate being in a room with another person; it freaks me out. I was sort of going umm, some other time maybe, but they wouldn't give up, so in the end, I said, 'well, I hope you're not snake phobic, because I've got 11 snakes.'

First they did a double take and looked horrified but then they said, well, perhaps I'll come and see them anyway... (Served me right eh?)

Never fear, I shall wriggle out of it ...

As for the retic who ate its readi-brek ...I reckon that's one of those cereal myths ...

The funniest thing that was ever said to me was by a very sweet person who's phobic but does their best to understand my snake addiction, and that was: 'Do they cover up their dumps like a cat?'

Bless! (Yeah, they have to be provided with a little snakey shovel ...)

I got -told- from a co-workers the other day who looked at me with digust for owning snakes that her friends friends sister's boyfriend or whatever once owned a boa constrictor and that it used to lay next to her to measure if it was big enough to eat her so they had to sell it ....

I didn't want to be rude but couldn't resist laughing.

Omg Kelf, u too?? Hands up all members who've heard the variation(s) of this same tail??? There must be a lot of hungry man-eating boas/burmese/retics out there running loose, and they always seem to be owned by "a friend of my mother's uncle", "my grandmother's second cousin twice removed on her father's side" etc etc! How considerate of these snakes to measure up their intended victims and to not eat the people unless they fit neatly inside 'em!

Don't sweat it Kelf, the world has no shortage of opinionated, poorly educated planks, who like to spout their bile to anyone who will listen, all we have to hope is they aren't allowed to breed and their genetic line ends with them.
